Revision 1
1.0 GENERAL
1.1 Summary
A. Scope of Specification
This specification prescribes requirements for marking piping systems to assist in identification
of conveyed materials and their possible hazards.
This specification does not include requirements for marking or identification of below ground
piping or piping in buildings.
C. Terminology
Low Halide Material: Containing less than 150 mg/liter (ppm) of leachable chlorides and
fluorides. Pipe markers that are to be applied to base, painted, insulated stainless steels, or
nickels must be of this type.
1.2 References
The publications listed below form part of this specification. Each publication forming part of this
specification shall be the latest revision and addendum in effect on the date this specification is issued
for construction unless noted otherwise. Except as modified by the requirements specified herein or the
details of the drawings, Work included in this specification shall conform to the applicable provisions
of these publications.
B. Government Requirements
Where criteria in this specification are affected by Kingdom of Saudi Arabia legislation,
regulation, standard and codes, this specification shall be modified as necessary to ensure
compliance.
2.0 MATERIALS
2.1 General
Wherever brand or trade names are mentioned herein, they are for the purpose of identifying general
types of acceptable materials.

Revision 1
A. Construction
Pipe markers may be constructed using stencils, tape, self-adhesive or snap-on type markers.
Markers for use outdoors shall be constructed using materials that prevent fading due to
sunlight. Materials used to mark stainless steel and nickel piping shall be of the low halide type.
Marking materials used in corrosive environments shall be capable of withstanding attack by the
corrosives. Pipe Marker materials must be capable of withstanding the design temperature of the
surface to which they are to be applied.
B. Legend
Pipe markers shall indicate, in Arabic and English, the normal service and flow direction of the
piping system. Positive identification of the contents of a piping system shall be by lettered
legend giving the name of the contents in full or abbreviated form.
C. Dimensions
Pipe markers minimum dimensions and letter size are to meet ASME A13.1 dimensions given
in Attachment 01.
D. Color Coding
Lettering and background color are to be in accordance with ASME A13.1 and are indicated in
Attachment 02. Biohazardous piping systems shall be classified as an inherently hazardous
material.
E. Strapping Tape
To assure secure attachment of adhesive type pipe markers to difficult surfaces, circumferential
taping shall be applied as required to strap the pipe marker to the pipe or insulation. Color of the
strapping tape shall be the same as the pipe marker background color as indicated in Attachment
02.
A. Construction
Valve tags shall be constructed of a rigid laminate phenolic or metallic material and
permanently attached to valves using a permanent steel cable or wire installation. In corrosive
environments, stainless steel or other suitable material that can withstand the corrosives shall be
used.
B. Legend
A numbering system for valve tag labels for both automated and manual valves in the facility
shall be formulated similar to the following:

Revision 1
XXXX.YYY
Where:
XXXX: A 1-4 alphanumeric code that shall be used to identify the system and is given in
Attachment 02.
YYY: A 3 digit serial number (001-999). Valves shall be assigned a unique number,
regardless of the prefix code.
C. Dimensions
Suggested valve tag dimensions and letter size requirements are given in Attachment 01.
D. Color Coding
Valve tag lettering and background colors are to be in accordance with ASME A13.1 and are
indicated in Attachment 02.
3.0 EXECUTION
A. Install pipe markers for easy viewing from the most likely viewing point and install at or
adjacent to the following:
Changes of direction.
Main and branch isolation valves.
Wall, ceiling, and floor penetrations.
Pumps, tanks, transfer panels, and other equipment; install pipe markers within 2 meters (6
feet) of equipment connection Maximum of 6 meter (20 foot) spacing between markers
shall be verified and each room shall have a minimum of one marker on each line. All
branches and point of use drops are to be labeled.

Revision 1
B. Do not put plastic labels on non-insulated lines that will operate above 60°C (140°F).
A. Valve tags are to be installed for easy viewing from the most likely viewing point. Both manual
and automated valves shall be tagged. Valve tags shall be attached to the body of the valve
using stainless steel cable or wire and stainless steel wire clamps.
B. For valves located above the ceiling, a second tag or tack type tag shall be made and mounted in
a visible place in order to assist operators in locating the valve.

NOTES:
Color codes are designated for services according to the following classifications:
1. Yellow background with black lettering is designated for materials that are inherently dangerous.
2. Green background with white lettering is designated for liquid or liquid mixture materials of inherently low
hazard.
3. Blue background with white lettering is designated for gas or gaseous mixture materials of inherently low
hazard.
4. Red background with white lettering is designated for fire quenching materials.
