Engagement 1. The teacher will ask the students if germs are good or bad for us. [bad]
2. The teacher will ask students to describe some ways that we can prevent
germs [washing hands, covering mouth when sneezing]
3. The teacher will tell students that they will be watching a video about ways to
prevent the spread of germs.

5. The teacher will ask students to explain why practicing personal hygiene is
important.
Exploration 1. The teacher will tell students that one of the easiest, most common way to
stop the spread of germs is hand washing.
2. The teacher will ask students if washing hands with only water will wash
away the germs.
3. The teacher will explain the activity:
a. Students will stick their hands in glitter. They will pretend that the
glitter is germs. They will practice washing hands with just water, and
then with soap and water.
4. After students complete the activity, the teacher will repeat the question, “Will
washing your hands with only water wash away the germs?” [no]
5. The teacher will ask the students to describe the difference in washing with
soap and without soap.
6. The teacher will explain that like the glitter, germs will not wash off easily
using just water. It takes water and soap, and thorough scrubbing, to
successfully remove the germs on our hands.

Explanation 1. The teacher will explain that germs are tiny living organisms that can get into
our bodies and make us sick when we don’t exercise proper hygiene.
2. The teacher will use the Google Slides presentation to teach vocabulary and
proper health practices.

3. The teacher will ask the following questions:
a. What can happen when germs get into our bodies?
b. Where do germs come from?
c. Is there anything we can do to stay safe from germs and sicknesses?
d. What are ways that we practice good personal hygiene at school?
Explanation The teacher will complete formative assessment by observing students
Assessment during group discussion about the higher order thinking questions.
Elaboration 1. The teacher will explain that students will be creating a poster to display
around the school, describing an important way to prevent the spread of
germs.
2. The teacher will give each student a topic for their poster (wash hands, eat
healthy, cover mouth to cough/sneeze, etc.)
3. Students will open their chromebooks to follow along with the teacher.
4. The teacher will model, using the overhead projector, how to open Google
Slides and begin a new project.
5. The teacher will model and explain how to insert words and images, and the
different editing tools.
6. While modeling, the teacher will create a poster like the one below so
students understand the expectations.

7. The teacher will give students time to complete their Google Slide, while
walking around to assist as needed.
Elaboration The teacher will perform formative assessments as students create their Google
Assessment Slide, by observing and asking questions. After completing posters, the teacher
will assess each student on their participation and understanding using a rubric
(found in the Evaluation phase).
