The  5  Es

E   Description

Engagement   1.   The  teacher  will  ask  the  students  if  germs  are  good  or  bad  for  us.  [bad]
2.   The  teacher  will  ask  students  to  describe  some  ways  that  we  can  prevent
germs  [washing  hands,  covering  mouth  when  sneezing]
3.   The  teacher  will  tell  students  that  they  will  be  watching  a  video  about  ways  to
prevent  the  spread  of  germs.

Link:  https://youtu.be/YBGsoimPXZg
4.   The  teacher  will  ask  about  ways  to  prevent  the  spread  of  germs  that  they
heard  in  the  video.
5.   The  teacher  will  ask  students  to  explain  why  practicing  personal  hygiene  is
important.

Engagement   The  teacher  will  perform  formative  assessments  by  observing

Assessment   students  during  group  discussion  before  and  after  Engagement  video

Exploration   1.   The  teacher  will  tell  students  that  one  of  the  easiest,  most  common  way  to
stop  the  spread  of  germs  is  hand  washing.
2.   The  teacher  will  ask  students  if  washing  hands  with  only  water  will  wash
away  the  germs.
3.   The  teacher  will  explain  the  activity:
a.   Students  will  stick  their  hands  in  glitter.  They  will  pretend  that  the
glitter  is  germs.  They  will  practice  washing  hands  with  just  water,  and
then  with  soap  and  water.
4.   After  students  complete  the  activity,  the  teacher  will  repeat  the  question,  “Will
washing  your  hands  with  only  water  wash  away  the  germs?”  [no]
5.   The  teacher  will  ask  the  students  to  describe  the  difference  in  washing  with
soap  and  without  soap.
6.   The  teacher  will  explain  that  like  the  glitter,  germs  will  not  wash  off  easily
using  just  water.  It  takes  water  and  soap,  and  thorough  scrubbing,  to
successfully  remove  the  germs  on  our  hands.

Exploration   The  teacher  will  perform  formative  assessments  by

Assessment   observing  students  during  activity  and  group  discussion.

E   Description

Explanation   1.   The  teacher  will  explain  that  germs  are  tiny  living  organisms  that  can  get  into
our  bodies  and  make  us  sick  when  we  don’t  exercise  proper  hygiene.
2.   The  teacher  will  use  the  Google  Slides  presentation  to  teach  vocabulary  and
proper  health  practices.

3.   The  teacher  will  ask  the  following  questions:
a.   What  can  happen  when  germs  get  into  our  bodies?
b.   Where  do  germs  come  from?
c.   Is  there  anything  we  can  do  to  stay  safe  from  germs  and  sicknesses?
d.   What  are  ways  that  we  practice  good  personal  hygiene  at  school?

Explanation   The  teacher  will  complete  formative  assessment  by  observing  students
Assessment   during  group  discussion  about  the  higher  order  thinking  questions.

Elaboration   1.   The  teacher  will  explain  that  students  will  be  creating  a  poster  to  display
around  the  school,  describing  an  important  way  to  prevent  the  spread  of
germs.
2.   The  teacher  will  give  each  student  a  topic  for  their  poster  (wash  hands,  eat
healthy,  cover  mouth  to  cough/sneeze,  etc.)
3.   Students  will  open  their  chromebooks  to  follow  along  with  the  teacher.
4.   The  teacher  will  model,  using  the  overhead  projector,  how  to  open  Google
Slides  and  begin  a  new  project.
5.   The  teacher  will  model  and  explain  how  to  insert  words  and  images,  and  the
different  editing  tools.
6.   While  modeling,  the  teacher  will  create  a  poster  like  the  one  below  so
students  understand  the  expectations.

7.   The  teacher  will  give  students  time  to  complete  their  Google  Slide,  while
walking  around  to  assist  as  needed.

Elaboration   The  teacher  will  perform  formative  assessments  as  students  create  their  Google
Assessment   Slide,  by  observing  and  asking  questions.  After  completing  posters,  the  teacher
will  assess  each  student  on  their  participation  and  understanding  using  a  rubric
(found  in  the  Evaluation  phase).
