4. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.7-Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a
print or digital text to demonstrate an understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.

Objective
● The students will be able to illustrate life in Kenya by creating a class mural with 95%
accuracy.

● Students will be able to identify the values of the story through peer/group discussion
with 95% accuracy.

● Students will be able to correctly compare and contrast life in the U.S. and Kenya
through the use of a Venn diagram with 90% accuracy.

Materials Needed
v The book Mama Panya’s Pancakes: A Village Tale from Kenya written by Mary
and Rich Chamberline
v Writing utensils (Crayons, markers, colored pencils)

v 6 ft.White butcher paper (To create class mural)


v Safety scissors (To cut construction paper)
v Various colors of construction paper
v Glue
v Venn Diagram worksheet
v Smart Board Projector (for video)

Procedure
1. Introduce: Watch “Ahero an African Bush Market”

this video was filmed?” “Today, we are going to read a story about one little boy’s trip to
a market just like this one. The book is called Mama Panya’s Pancakes by Mary and
Rich Chamberline.”
2. Read: Teacher reads the book aloud to the entire class.
3. Discuss: In a whole group discussion students will be asked a series of four questions
that will be answered in a round robin discussion. Students will then break into small
groups (3 or 4 students) to discuss the fifth and final question. At the end of the
discussion groups will share their thoughts.
● Question 1. What did you see in the illustrations that provide you with evidence that the
story is set in a village in Kenya?
● Question 2. How does Mama Panya feel when Adika is inviting everyone to dinner?
● Question 3. How was the market in the story similar to the stores in the U.S.? How was it
different?
● Question 4. How did this story end, and why?
● Question 5. What do you think would have happened if the guests had not brought extra
food to share? How would this have changed the outcome of the story?

Activities
1. Students will work independently to create a Venn diagram using words and pictures
from the story to correctly identify the similarities and differences of an African Village
in Kenya and the city where they live.

2. The class will work as a whole group to illustrate what they have learned about village
life in Kenya. Illustrations will include: Plants, animals, clothing, and homes. (hands-on)

Evaluation
● The teacher will assess students work on the Venn diagram for accuracy.
● The teacher will monitor students during group activities to assess student’s knowledge
of Kenyan culture as well as observe students modeling appropriate group behavior and
values such as sharing that were learned in the story.
