CYNTHIA ANN BELL,
ern newene having been duly sworn, testified in the Grand Jury
proceedings as follows:
EXAMINATION
BY MR. AUCHINCLOSS:
Q Good morning, Miss Bell.
A Good morning.
Q Can you tell me what is your -- what is your
10 vocation?
at A My occupation?
12 Q Yes, your occupation.
13 A I'ma corporate flight attendant on private
14 jets.
15 Q Okay. And in the year 2003, specifically in
16 February of 2003, who was your employer?
17 A I was employed by Extra Jet International.
18 Q And what was your assignment for Extra Jet
19 International at that time?
20 A Well, as a corporate flight attendant.
a1 Q Okay. How long have you been a corporat
22 flight attendant?
468
October of -- I'm sorry, September, late September of
eornnewne ‘04.
Q 1037
A 103. I'm sorry.
Q Yeah.
A ‘04 hasn't occurred.
Q So tell me what is Extra Jet?
A Extra Jet is a company that has several
Gulfstream aircraft and lighter jet. And they operate
10 out of Santa Monica, Van Nuys and Chino, California as a
at part 134 charter.
12 Q So these are private jet charters?
13 A That is correct.
14 Q And during your employment for Extra Jet did
15 you ever work for a client by the name of Michael
16 Jackson?
17 A Yes.
18 Q All right. 1'11 show you People's Exhibit No.
19 40 and ask you if you can identify this photograph?
20 Yes.
POD Oo Dy
21 Who is that?
469
Q dust with Extra Jet, yes.
orn newene A At least -- at least three.
Q okay.
A I'm sorry, all the flights kind of blend
together when you fly so often.
Q understand. So if you just give us your best
recollection, if you have one.
A I'd say about, no more than six, but about --
in between three and six.
10 Q Okay. And did you also act as the preparation
at person for that flight in terms of beveraye and Zood
12 service, that type of thing?
13 A Yes, sir.
14 Q All right. When was the last time you were a
15 flight hostess for Mr. Jackson, if you recall?
16 A About a year ago.
17 Q And during your employ with Extra Jet, and your
18 experience as a flight hostess for Mr. Jackson, could
20 flight?
a1 A We had a lot of interaction on our private
22 jets. They typically only seat between ten and 14
23 people.
24 Q Uh-huh.
25 A It's very close and intimate. It's much more
470
A Yes, sir, it is.
ern newne Q Type -- is that the type of plane you flew on
with Mr. Jackson?
A That is correct.
18 event of an emergency.
19 Once we would get out of elevation, go ahead
471
A I'm sorry, I'm so nervous.
ern newne Q That's fine. It's normal. And just take a
deep breath. There is some water up there as well.
A Thank you.
Q Okay. So let's talk about, in terms of a
flight that was coast to coast, how long does a Miami to
Santa Barbara flight take?
A Depending on head winds, typically five hours.
Q And so would you have food service on that
10 flight, I take it?
a A Yes. Absolutely.
12 Q How many food services would you have?
13 A Mr. Jackson always requested KFC with all the
14 fixings. So it was hard to stagger your service. It
15 didn't allow for you te do appetizers and that sort of
16 thing.
17 Q KFC meaning what?
472
A Typically a full house. We call it a full
ernnewne house. Not a dry seat in the aircraft. He usually
traveled with as many people as possible, it seened
like.
Q And is it fair to say with more people, that
increased your duties?
A Absolutely.
Q So how busy were you on a full -- on a packed
flight from Miami to Santa Barbara?
10 A very busy.
an Q How much down time did you have when you gol Lo
12 sit down for a minute and --
13 A No. There's never any down time in the cabin.
14 It's discouraged to sit down.
15 Q So you are going for four and a half hours?
16 A 24, seven.
17 Q Are you on your feet that entire time?
18 A The entire tine.
19 Q And at some point during that entire time
20 you're having some interaction either -- well, you tell
a1 me. What are you doing when you're standing up during
22 that?
23 A With Mr. Jackson we had a lot of interaction.
24 He -- he's very soft-spoken and very he really he
25 likes to be addressed. He likes the attention. Because
26 he's so soft-spoken, and he's kind of touchy-feely also,
27 like literally I would have to lean down on my knee and
28 get eye contact and really lean in to like hear what he
473
was asking for.
ernnewne Q Okay. And the record can reflect that the
witness just bent down on one knee and leaned forward as
if to listen to somebody who was seated.
Okay. And what about his guests, how demanding
were they?
A Depending on who was on the flight, his
children were always lovely, but very -- they like to be
played with and talked to.
10 Q Would you engage in that type of activity?
at A Yes.
474
the ground and asked me to make certain that Mr. Jackson
ernnewne had wine, and also who in my cabin was going to be
drinking what.
So I went ahead and I prepared all of the
drinks. And when I served Mr. Jackson his wine in a
fluted crystal stem, he sat the drink down and went,
"No." At that point I went ahead and took away the
glass and put it in a diet Coke can.
Why did you do that?
pO RO
475
AI also served him vodka drinks in that same
ernnewone fashion. But as for his wine, I would go ahead into the
lav and pour out the diet Coke and go ahead and fill the
can with whatever sort of alcoholic beverage he was
going to be drinking.
Q Uh-huh.
A And I would go ahead and I would put it on ice
in the kitchen area in order for it to be chilled.
And he was -- I mean, he knew. I'd instructed
10 everyone that had flown him to make certain to get eye
at contact and say, "Here's your diet Coke, Mr. gackson."
12 So he was aware, you know, of what was going on.
13 Q Okay, Did you make eye contact with him to
14 make sure he understood?
15 A Yes.
16 Q That --
17 A When I first did it I did. When I set the
18 drink down I was really clear, "Here is your diet Coke,
19 Mr. Jackson." And he caught on fairly quickly, because
20 he hadn't asked me for -- I knew that he wanted a
a1 specific beverage. He asked me to take it away. and
22 when I returned, it was obvious that that is what I
23 was -- my plan was for him.
24 Q Okay. Obvious to everybody or just Mr.
25 Jackson?
26 A It was obvious to him.
27 Q Okay, And what type of wine would he drink,
28 typically?
476
A You know, he didn't have good taste in wine.
eornnewne He, like yucky Kendall Jackson and --
Q But in terms of white versus red?
A Oh, I'm sorry. He was a white wine drinker.
Q Okay. Okay. And during a coast to coast
flight, how many cans would he consume, if you recall?
A It just depended upon -- I always kept chree
bottles of white wine on board. Mr. Jackson's one of
the most nervous fliers I have ever experienced in my
10 life. And just depending on how turbulent the flight
a was, I did have a flight with him where he weul Lurough
12 all my wine and started in with red. It was -- I
13 just
14 Q Okay. Went through three bottles of white and
15 started with a red?
16 A Red. Uh-huh.
17 Q You mentioned that he would also drink vodka
18
19 A Yes.
20 Q Tell us about that?
a1 A He -- he was very -- he really enjoyed, I
22 believe it was Gray Goose vodka. I had a flight
23 where -- with him with several passengers where four of
24 the passengers were drinking, but they consumed almost
25 an entire 7.5 milliliter bottle of vodka on that trip.
26 QA fifth?
27 A Is that what it's called? Yeah.
28 Q You tell me, I'm --
477
A 750 milliliters is just about the size of a
ernnewne wine bottle.
Q All right. And would these drinks of Mr.
Jackson be served in a glass or in a Coke can?
A Ina Coke can. The other beverages that were
served on board my aircraft were always served in
crystal. He was the only individual that was served in
a Coke can.
Q And if -- unless Mr. Jackson told someone that
10 he was drinking white wine, or a mixed drink, or unless
at someone smelled or drank from that cau, did auybody else
12 on the flight typically know that Mr. Jackson was not
13 drinking diet Coke?
14 A It's possible
15 Q But I mean, as far as you know?
16 A As far as I know --
17 Q Well, how would it --
18 A It could be knowledge, because it was almost
19 comical. Like, "Here's your diet Coke." It didn't -- I
20 mean, in my opinion I would be very suspect.
a1 Q Let me ask you this. Did you ever tell anybody
22 that there was something other than diet Coke in the can
23 in terms of guests of Mr. Jackson on his flights?
24 A Yes. The medical doctor.
25 Q Okay. Anybody other than the medical doctor?
26 A No.
27 Q Okay. Miss Bell, I show you People's Exhibit
28 35. Can you identify that for me, please? Do you
478
recognize those children?
ern newne A Yes, I do.
A That is correct.
Q They were his guests?
A That is correct.
10 Q How many times had you flown those children?
at A Once.
19 Q Of which year?
20 A 103.
a1 Q Who else was on that flight, if you recall?
22 A Grace.
23 Q Who's Grace?
24 A Grace is his head governess.
25 Q Uh-huh.
26 A Their mother was on board. ‘Two governesses.
27 Q Their mother meaning whose mother?
28 A These children.
479
Q Okay.
eornnewne A Their mom was on board.
Q Okay.
A Two governesses, Paris, Prince, Prince, Jr.
Q Are those Mr. Jackson's children?
A Yes.
Q Okay.
A There was -- there was one other person who was
on board who was this girl's best friend, so they say,
10 or so they said, who I remember her saying that she was
at either Latoya's daughter, or one of the Jackson members
12 daughter.
13 Q Okay.
14 A I'm not exactly sure which of the -- which of
18 that flight.
19 QO All right. During that flight did you put wine
21 A I did.
22 Q Do you recall if you served him any mixed
23 drinks on that flight?
24 A I did.
25 Q What type of mixed drinks?
26 A I served -- I served him vodka and diet Coke.
27 Q Can you characterize the level of alcohol
28 consumption that he -- of Mr. Jackson during that
480
flight?
ern newne A Yeah. He was intoxicated. He --
Q How much -- how much alcohol was he drinking,
if you can give me an idea?
A That's sort of a hard thing to estimate,
because I don't ever really police people's consumption.
Q Okay.
A However, at the end of the flight, I really --
I thought about it, because we went through a lot of
10 alcohol on that flight.
at Q okay. Types of alcohol did you go Lhrough?
12 A Vodka and wine.
13 Q Okay.
14 A And I was serving Bacardi and Coke.
19 A That's correct.
20 Q Okay. During the entire flight?
a1 A Yes. For most of the flight, that's correct.
22 Q And during that flight did Mr. Jackson consume
23 all of his alcohol in diet Coke cans?
24 A That is correct.
25 Q Did you ever see Mr. Jackson serve that wine to
26 any other children?
27 A No.
28 Q Okay. How many crew members are on board?
4ar
A Three.
eornnewne Q And what are their designated assignments?
A There's a pilot, who's the pilot in command,
and a co-pilot and --
Q And yourself?
A And myself, that is correct.
Q Okay. That really answers my question.
MR. AUCHINCLOSS: All right. Questions from
the Grand Jury?
10 THE WITNESS: It's like playing telephoze.
at Excuse me, the gentleman ou Lhe right has a --
12 MR. ZONEN: They get us eventually.
13 Q BY MR. AUCHINCLOSS: Okay. Again, some of
a1 A No.
22 Q Other than Michael Jackson?
23 A No.
24 Q Okay. And is it possible that Mr. Jackson
25 could have given a sip to the individual that was seated
26 right next to him when your attention was focused
27 elsewhere?
28 A It's possible. It is possible.
482
Q What time did the flight take off?
ern newne A That was, I want to say, because -- that was in
between three and four in the afternoon.
Q Okay. This is the flight from Miami to Santa
Barbara, the one we're talking about?
A That's correct.
433
touchy-feely and very soft-spoken.
ern newene Is it odd that -- I mean, I guess people could
say that it's odd that he always had to touch my arm and
had to have communication. I had to get on my knee to
hear him. I mean --
484
Q Okay. So you did serve alcohol to the girl in
ernnewne that picture?
A The girl and her friend, that's correct.
Q Okay. what about the young man in the middle,
did you see anything unusual about his behavior?
A Yeah, I did, actually.
Q Okay. Describe it?
A He seemed very clicky. Like, like really -- he
seemed defensive when I had conversations with Mr.
10 Jackson. He was very demanding, like, "Get this. We
at need more of this, This chicken isu'l war." He was
12 very he was rude, quite frankly.
13 Q And -- but my focus, the point of my question
14 is, did he seem intoxicated, or at all --
15 A He's kind of a weird kid as it is. So it would
16 be hard for me to judge if he was intoxicated.
17 That's it. I mean --
oPo POP Oo
485
around him, cuddling him, anything like that? Was he
ernnewne affectionate?
A Yeah. He had his arm around him at times.
MR. AUCHINCLOSS: Okay. Any other questions?
All right. We have an admonishment for you.
20 admonish you.
a1 THE WITNESS: Okay.
22 MR. AUCHINCLOSS: That the Court in this case
486
MR. AUCHINCLOSS: Okay. Thank you.
eornnewne THE WITNESS: Thank you.
MR. AUCHINCLOSS: You are excused. Thank you.
THE WITNESS: Thanks. Bye guys.
MR. AUCHINCLOSS: Madam Secretary, at this time
I will provide you with the questions for the witness
Cindy Bell.
And I will read into the record the -- well,
what is everyone's pleasure at this time? We can look
10 at the exhibits.
at GRAND JUROR 300178895: Well, cau you -- can we
12 have for the record sone identification of the middle
13 person in that photograph?
14 MR. AUCHINCLOSS: Yes.
15 GRAND JUROR 300178895: Because I don't know
16 who they're talking about.
17 MR. AUCHINCLOSS: Well, that photograph -- all
18 of those witnesses have testified. So you can identify
19 them for yourself. And you will be allowed to look at
20 that momentarily.
a1 As far as the next order of business, we can
22 either look at the exhibits or take a brief break, then
23 look at the exhibits.
24 GRAND JUROR 300014605: What do we have after
25 that?
26 MR. AUCHINCLOSS: That's it for today. It
27 might take you a while to go through them, so I'll give
28 you that option.
487
