RCA BAMBIL
PROPOSED MINADER EXAMINATION QUESTONS 2016
CASE STUDY Time Allowed 6hours coefficient 5

Mr. Ntuba is a farmer in Fako Division. He has 6 hectares of land forcrops on which he
cultivates maize, soya bean, tomato and Irish potato without rotation. He also runspoultry, a fish
pond and a piggery on an additional hectare of land below the crop farm. Soil analysis shows that
the soil PH in one of the sites above the fish pond has changed from 8 to 5. His crop farm is on a
gentle slope and he has of resent experienced poor yields in crops due to pests and diseases.

1.a) In which agro -ecological zone is Mr Ntuba’s farm(1mark)

b) Name other agro-ecological regions in Cameroon (2marks)
2. Namethe family of the 2 crops in Mr.Ntuba’s farm that are in one farmily (2marks)
3. Name 2 major diseases that are common to the crops in number 2 above and 2 control
measures for control of thesediseases (4marks)
4. If the Agricultural Extension worker advices Mr. Ntuba to make compost and apply in his
farm ,give 2 characteristics of the type of grass you expect him to use and in each case justify
your choice (4marks)
5. Give 4 benefits that Mr.Ntuba will get from using the decomposed compost (4 marks)
6. Name 2 fixed costs and 2variable costs to be incurred in Mr. Ntuba’s poultry house (4marks)
7. If Mr. Ntuba’ s poultry house is worth 2000000fcfa and has a life span of 10 years what will
be the contribution to annual fixed cost by the poultry house?(2marks)
8.Name 2 parasites in the piggery and 2 poultry diseases that Mr. Ntuba risk having in his farm
and how he could prevent them(2marks)

9.Give 4 strategies that Mr. Ntuba may employ in order to ease the marketing of his farm output
(4marks)

10. Give 4 possible causes of the change in PH of the soil (6marks)

11. What can he do to reverse the drop in PH?(1marks)
12. What is the likely cause of the outbreak of diseases and pests in his crop farm?(2marks)
13. What cultural practice should he adopt to reverse the trend of pests and diseases in number
twelve above?(2marks)
14. What is the likely environmental effect that awaits his fish pond and why?(2marks)
15. How can he preempt this negative environmental effect that awaits his fish pond?(2marks)
16. What is the farming system practiced by Mr. Ntuba?(2marks)
17. Give 2 advantages of the farming system in number 16above(2marks)
18. Name 2 crops in MrNtuba’s Farm that have a common family (2marks
Marking Guide
1.a) Coastal Lowlands
b) Western Highlands, Adamawa plateau, Northern Lowlands, SouthernPlateau
2..Solanaceae
3. Major diseases that are common to the solanaceae family are bacterial wilt and blight.
Bacteral wilt can be controlled by the use of clean seeds and crop rotation as well as
roquingwhile blight can be controlled by sanitation and pruning as well as the use of fungicides
4. The characteristics of the type of grass that is good for compost are:
 Succulent grass and low C/N Ratio The Succulent grass is easy to decompose and low
C/N ratio indicates high nitrogenous content
5.Benefits of organic matter in the farm the farm are:
 Organic matter incorporated into soil provides nutrients to the plant
 The Buffering Capacity of the Soil is greatly improved by Soil Colloidal Organic Matter
(Humus)
 Organic Matter is a Major Source of Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC)
 The Humus Produced from Organic, Confers Absorptive Capacity of Water to the Soil
 The humus produced during the decomposition of organic matter in the soil has low
plasticity and cohesion, therefore, helps to alleviate unfavourable structural
characteristics of clayey soils in particular. It encourages granulation.
 Organic Matter Serves as Source of Energyfor Microbes in Soil
 . Coarse organic materials on the soil surface reduces the impact of raindrops and
reduces run-off and wind erosion
 Applied as mulches, organic matter helps to regulate soil temperatures, and reduces
evapo-transpirational losses of water
6.- Fixed costs in a poultry house include:

Drinkers, Feeders, Poultry house, Salaries of permanent staff etc.

_Variable costs in a poultry house include:
Feed, vaccines, wages of temporal workers etc.
7. 200000fca
8.

Parasites in control
piggrey
Lice,ticks,mites Sanitation, use of insecticides
worms Sanitation, Deworming

9.Fourstrategiesthat Mr. Neba can use to sell his output can be found in the marketing mix or
the four which include Price, place, product and promotion
10.Four possible causes of a drop in PH of the soil are:

 Decomposition of Soil Organic Matter

 Leaching of Cations
 Removal of Cations by Harvest
 Use of other Acid forming Fertilizers
 Carbon Dioxide, CO2 from respiration of roots and microbes
 Oxidation of Ammonium Compound
 Oxidation of Sulphur
 Concentration of Aluminium in the Soil

11. Liming can be done to reverse the drop in PH

12. The likely cause of the outbreak of diseases and pests in his crop farm is the non-practice of
crop rotation in the farm
13.. Practice of crop rotation in the farm
14. The likely environmental effect that awaits his fish pond is Eutrophication because of the
fertilizer can be washed into the fish pond by run off thus causing eutrophication in the fish
pond.
15. He can preempt this negative environmental effect that awaits his fish pond by checking
erosion in his crop farm.

16. The farming system practiced by Mr. Neba is mixed farming

17. Advantages of mixed farming are:
 Availability of manure from animal droppings
 Crop remains and grains can be used to feed the animals
18. Two crops in MrNeba’s Farm that have a common family are tomato and Irish potato.
