1.1) CT Requirement for Transformer Differential Protection

CT CALC, 11KV - 7
The relay for this protection application will be mounted at 132kV Relay panel.

Calculation of VK at 11kV Side

As per M/s.Alstom recommendations, the knee point voltage of CT’s is governed by the
following relation :
Vk  I thr x (R ct + 2Rl + R b)
Vk = Knee point voltage in volts

CT CALC, 11KV - 8
I thr = Through Fault Current

R ct = CT Sec. resistance at 75C in ohms = 14 Ohms

2 Rl = CT Sec. loop resistance = 2 x 0.675 = 1.35 Ohms

Rb = Relay Burden = 0.1 VA

Transformer impedance considered = 31.5%

CT CALC, 11KV - 9
Fault MVA = 50 = 158.73 MVA
0.315

The maximum through fault current = 158.73 x 103

 3 x 11

= 8331 Amps

Corresponding secondary current = 8331

CT CALC, 11KV - 10
3200

= 2.6 Amps

Doc.No.JAP006-D73/COM/D21/2162

CT CALC, 11KV - 11
Hence, the selected value of I thr = 3 Amps

Vk  3 x (14 + 2 x 0.675 + 0.1 )

 46.35 Volts

CT CALC, 11KV - 12
Therefore Vk required for transformer differential protection

Relay type/Make : DCD124A, M/s.VA Tech Reyrolle, U.K

CT Ratio : 3200/1 A

CT CALC, 11KV - 16
Class of accuracy : CL X

1.2.1) Calculation of Knee Point Voltage VK :-

The calculation of knee point voltage for REF protection is carried out as per
ESI 48 – 3.

1.2.1.1) Stability Voltage Setting Vs :-

As per clause 7.3.1 & Fig. 9 of ESI 48 – 3

CT CALC, 11KV - 17
(i) Consider an external phase to earth short circuit and assume complete
saturation of a line CT, then Vs shall not be less than

Vs > IF [A+B+F+G+(T2/T3)2 (H+2K+Rb) ] T1

Where
IF = Fault current corresponding to rated stability limit.

Where, RL = Lead resistance for 75 Meters length = 0.675 Ohms

Doc.No.JAP006-D73/COM/D21/2162

CT CALC, 11KV - 21
Therefore A = 14 + 0.675

N = Resistance of wiring plus CT secondary winding for

neutral CT

CT CALC, 11KV - 22
Where, RL = Lead resistance for 100 Meters length = 0.9 Ohms

Doc.No.JAP006-D73/COM/D21/2162

CT CALC, 11KV - 26
(iii) Consider an external phase to phase short circuit and assume complete
saturation of a line CT, then Vs shall not be less than

Vs  IF (A+G+(T2/T3)2 (H + 3k + 3Rb/2) T1 Volts

CT CALC, 11KV - 27
(iv) Consider an external three-phase short circuit and assume complete
saturation of a line CT, then Vs shall not be less than

3200
 192.56 Volts

CT CALC, 11KV - 28
From (i), (ii), (iii) & (iv) above, consider the stability voltage setting of

Vs = 210 Volts

1.2.1.2) Knee Point Voltage VK :-

As per ESI 48 – 3, the knee point voltage of CTs for REF protection shall be
atleast twice that of stability voltage setting

Vk  2 Vs

CT CALC, 11KV - 29
 2 x 210

 420 Volts

However as per item 1.1, the Vk required for transformer differential protection is

1.3) Magnetising Current Imag :-

As per ESI 48-3 when the protected winding of the transformer is not connected
to a solidly earthed power system, the fault setting shall be between 10% and 25%
of the minimum current available for earth fault at the transformer terminals.

CT CALC, 11KV - 32
Minimum fault current at 11kV bus = 2000 A

The fault setting shall be between 200 to 500 A

Primary operating current Iop = (Is + In + 3 I1 + Im) / T1

Where

Is = Relay setting current

CT CALC, 11KV - 33
= 0.1 A

In = Neutral CT magnetizing
current at Vk/2

= 3 mA at Vk/2

I1 = Line CT magnetizing

CT CALC, 11KV - 35
Iop = [0.1+0.003+(3x0.003)+

= 374.4 Amps

= 18.7%

Approximately 19% of the minimum earth fault current.

CT CALC, 11KV - 36
Doc.No.JAP006-D73/COM/D21/2162

CT CALC, 11KV - 37
Since the fault setting is between 10% and 25% of the rated current of the
protected winding, as per ESI 48 – 3, the selected magnetizing current 3 mA is
suitable for the system protection.

1.4) Stabilising Resistor :-

Relay voltage setting Vs = 210 Volts

Relay current setting Is = 0.1A

CT CALC, 11KV - 38
Relay burden VA = 0.2 VA

Stabilising resistor Rsr = Vs - VA

= 2080 Ohms

CT CALC, 11KV - 39
Selected stabilizing resistor = 0 – 2700 Ohms (variable)

1.5) Requirement of Metrosil :-

The maximum voltage in the absence of CT saturation is

Vf = IF T1 (RCT+2RL+RSR+Rrelay)

CT CALC, 11KV - 40
= 13.12 [14 + (2 x 0.675) + 2080 + 20]
