PEANUT MARKETING NEWS – June 22, 2020 – Tyron Spearman, Editor (77)
PEANUT UPDATE FROM THE FIELD - At the USA Peanut Congress, Dr. Scott Monfort, University of Georgia, gave a a summary
report from the state's peanut specialist. Peanut specialists were asked to comment on acres, any stand concerns and key production
issues. Here's a summary: Southwest -
TEXAS – Emi Kimura
Acreage is about 170-175k acres, 80% Planted as of June 1st. Stand issues included seedling emergency issues were reported
in the Rolling Plains with Spanish type varieties due to the combinations among cool temperature and seedling diseases. CONCERNS:
Drought, market, disease pressure, herbicide resistant weeds.
OKLAHOMA – John Damicone
10-15,000 acres, 90% Planted before June 1. Stand Issues: We did have some early stands that took a while coming up due to
an early season cold snap. Generally, have appeared to recover and growing. CONCERNS: Price, contracts, yield, cost of production,
Return on investment.
NEW MEXICO – Naveen Puppala
Acreage should be the same as last year or little more. Hampton Farms bought Ready roast facility in Portales, NM. Planted as
of June 1st - 80% Planted – conventional 5%, organic 10-15%. Stand Issues - The weather was favorable at planting, and the stand looks
good, there was no issue with seed quality so far. CONCERNS - Irrigation Water can be limiting if timely rains are not received Return
on investment, demand for Valencia seed at planting has increased initially, as growers from Florida were calling for seed.
ARKANSAS – Travis Faske
35,000 for Arkansas and at least 10,000 for MO, 80% planted by June 1– growers trying not to plant in June, Any stand
issues? Poor weather, again for 2020 planting season. Similar to 2019, which ended with poor harvest conditions. Stand issues were
twofold: planting too early and cool, wet conditions persisted for April and poor seed quality for May. Poor quality for some standard
and high oleic seed. Cultivars - 80% standard (Georgia 06G) and 20% high oleic (Georgia 09B, TUFRunner 297, and FloRun 331).
Concerns: Those that are wanting to replant are unable to get seed in a timely manner. Summary - Later planting = later harvest = poor
conditions.
MISSISSIPPI – Brendan Zurweller
Acreage most likely in the 23-24K (up 20-25% from last year), Close to 90% planted by June 1. Planting weather has been
pretty favorable for much of the state this year. Much better than last season. On stand issues - Seen a few fields with stand problems.
They were planted right before the cold snap getting down to low 40’s at night for a few days with about 0.5” of rain. That in
combination with planting too deep (2” or greater) was likely the issue. Peanuts planted shallower before the cold snap had acceptable
stands. Main cultivars planted - Georgia 06G. Concerns: Commodity prices, Being profitable, Dry weather (until this week) has
prevent the last bit of acreage getting planted.
