Arjuna – Why we don’t see many people like stita pragya ?

K – ya nisha sarva bhuatanaam……. One who see God every where and Sees service every where is
samyamimi while others are not.

A sleeping man is not affected by objects around as it is not registered to his consciousness same for the
stita prayagya..

Everybody can see the sun but owl. As he is closing his eyes.

2.70 – karmi and self realized --- mentality of both is explained.

Material body – demands for sense gratification continues

But becoz of fullness a KC person is not disturbed as results are provided by the Lord. The proof of KC
men is that he has lost taste for sense gratification.

No material desires – peace

2.71 – Desire to become KC is desire less.

2.72 –

In 2.59, 2.61, 2.64 so after all this how u can say Nirvana is destroying ones existence.

Why we take time to understand i.e to realize ?

Rishi – sarva bhuta hrite, ability to perform austerity, minds r engaged within, welfare for others.

Muni – mental speculators

Q : KC person may have lost the taste in sg although the desires may be there ? what does it mean ?

A : SB : jaata karma …. 11.20.27

Chapter 3
T – Tyaga (3.1 -3.9) Renunciation

R - Rungs (on the Yoga Ladder) ( 10 -16)

E - Exemplary (17 – 35 )

E - Enemy of the soul (36 – 43 )

3rd chapter helps us to come up from enjoying mentality to serving mentality.

Connection between Chapter 2 and Chapter 3

In Bg. 2.49 “durena hy avaram…”, Krishna tells Arjuna o “To keep all abominable activities far distant by
Buddhi-yoga”
Arjuna thinks that buddhi means intelligence so By using his intelligence, he should avoid all abominable
activities and thus, not fight as he considers it to be abominable. Still Krishna is urging him to fight.

Chapter 3 begins with Arjuna’s question to clarify this contradictory instruction. According to Arjuna
(renunciation) ‘Jnana’ and ‘work’ are incompatible

How to be buddhi yogi & fight a war, this is what Arjuna thinks.

BG 3.3 – 3.9 Karma Yoga better then Sanhkya Yoga Krishna will Explain.
Jnana – path of analysis, what is matter what is spirit. Doesn’t leads to karma bandhana but not natural

Karma – action through senses, leads to karma bandhana but natural, As soul is active.

There is combination of these. Combine the advantages and remove the disadvantages – that is Bhakti
Yoga.

No karma Bandhan and Natural. As it employs detached action with knowledge.

Science – Theory & experiment, theory means to observe and then try to find out the explaination Eg:
fruit falling from the tree Newton.

Confirms the theory by experiments, that if fruits are falling here they might be falling everywhere.

Spirituality – Philosophy & Religion

Philosophy – I don’t want to die still there is death, can I live for ever. I’m not the body I’m soul. But how
to know. By the practice.

Religion – So by practice of devotional service. We exp the higher spiritual reality. We are able to giveup
so many bad habits. This is the proof.

Spirituality is of higher dimensional and transformational.

Diff – Material science is experimental while spiritual science is experiential. Experiment is done on us
and we have to experience the higher happiness.

Heart – lab

Chanting – process

One is trying to cultivate philosophy while other religion but they should ultimately come to one
conclusion.

Atma tattva part of Jnana Yoga

Nishkama karma yoga is a part of Karma Yoga

General tendancy is to give superiority to knowledge then action.

Two types of faith

1. Cultivates knowledge to become detached
2. Cultivates action to become detached

Säìkhya-yoga, or the analytical study of the nature of spirit and matter

Karma Yoga (Niskama Karma Yoga) – discharging karma for the want of realization of either Brahman,
Parmatma or Bhagavan. BG 12.10

They some time may not have a spiritual master, but they have the understanding that there is some
absolute truth and they may eventually come across a spiritual master.

Buddhi Yoga – typical sadhaka life, curbing the senses now and then through intelligence to engage in
the service of Absolute truth Krishna or Vishnu. Use buddhi continuously.

Description is in BG 12.9

Buddhi Yoga is superior to Karma Yoga as they practice certain principles to regulate mind and sense
under the direction of the spiritual master.

Vaidhi sadhana bhakti is Buddhi Yoga

Bhakti Yoga – BG 12.8

Engaged out of Love, he doesn’t struggles to engage. Doesn’t have to use buddhi to refrain from sense
object. Raganuga Bhakta.

Level of knowledge, faith and detachment determines the level.

Yoga Ladder :
1. Eating, sleeping, mating and defending – Animalistic life
2. Sense gratification according scriptures – Karma kanda (also called Sakama Karma) – reward

One is becoming submissive in this regard for achieving the result it’s a great thing atleast he is following
some authority. Attracting customers.

When he gets the knowledge that there has to be something beyond this demi god, then going on with
sense gratification business then one comes to the platform of Karma Yoga

3. Karma Yoga –
Sakama Karma Yoga – u do what u like to do for Krishna’s sake at the same time expect some
returns also.
Eg: Businessmen earns and gives a part saying this is urs Krishna that means he thinks rest is his.
Names for donation.

Nishkama Karma Yoga – he starts thinks K’s is providing every things why I should be attached to
grabing mentality. Anyone contemplation like this he is elevated.
Eg: Cooking, I’m cook like to do. Will do without motivation but if told to do something else then
“no”
Doesn’t like sadhana but doesn’t mind giving fruits……

From Karma Kanda to Karma Yoga :

Acceptance of transcendental goal change comes in consciousness. Eg: work in the temple but also want
to enjoy some benefits out of it.

Karma Yoga :

a. Sakam Karma Yogi – enjoying the fruits mentality

b. Nishkaam Karma Yogi – like to do something which one likes for Krishna

3.4 – 9
When we are not acting then the modes are active the default setting is modes act.

3.4

More imp is internal then the external

Renunciation of activity is not a means of purification; it is the result of purification.

Inner purification is essential for the adoption of the external form. When there is no inner purification
don’t giveup activity. Adoption of external form leads to inner purification.

3.5

Action is natural. Energy and action are intrinsic to the soul and direction is determined by the modes.

Eg: Tracking. If load is removed one may move even faster

Similarly the soul is burdened by the body.

Source is soul and modes are directors.

3.6 Inferiority of Sankhya Yoga

3.6 tells don’t become a pretender. With karma indriya he is not doing but with jnana indriya and
mind meditates on sense enjoyment.
Lord encourages grahastas then a pretender renunciates

One dwells on the thought and other suppresses it forcibly. So sublimation is required. He
neither enjoys or dwells, he takes shelter of Krishna, puts in front of Krishna, repent – I want
only pure devotional service plz Lord eradicate it then he is not called pretenders.
Hypocracy : accept the prestige and previlige w/o discharging the responsibility and the sacrifice
that is expected at that position.

Eg: Politician enjoying and not doing anything.

Types of pretender
o To practice KC activities w/o being KC just to make a show.
o To speak sophisticated philosophy w/o following it. Then should we not speak ? So
acknowledge one’s position.
o Active search for object of sense object.

Are we also pretender ? Till the time we don’t cherish it we aren’t.

One is consciously trying to bring back the memory or refresh the memory without is pretender.
Occasional thoughts are not hypocaracy but conscious endeavor.

Best is External change and internal change

Second is External change and sincere attempt for internal change

Third is external change without internal change.

Forth is external change and there is continuation of old ways in the garb of external change.

Here Krishna is not talking about Bhakti but he is talking Jnana and karma yoga.

In bhakti renouciation is not sadhana but it is a facility to perform that sadhna. We take
renunciation is a tool.

Naaham vipro na nar pati….. we takes renunciation for performing bhakti. Bhakti has activities.

3.7 Superiority of Karma Yoga

For self-realization,
a. one can live a controlled life, as prescribed in the çästras
b. continue carrying out his business without attachment, and in that way make progress
A sincere sweeper in the street is far better than the charlatan meditator who meditates only
for the sake of making a living. Here the mentality is condemned. Externals are useful when
they aid in the internals.
Purpose of renunciation is to focus on Krishna. Not for maintenance.
Q How to perform Karma Yoga if I don’t have an adequate level of detachment ?
A: Some feel if I stay away from sense object I will be away from maya, so let me renounce.
Some extent it is true. But something are so deeply rooted that when it goes out of sight it
becomes all together more stronger. So detachment has to be there. So some philosophical
understanding is needed. So we also need regulated activity.

If some is not behaving properly respect him from distance even for a devotee.
Dhaams are the places of devotion and deviation.
Our focus is not renouncing but connecting. Anxiety for serving K will take one to Krishna. We
try to develop reslationship with Krishna by taking responsibility and as through anxiety we
express our devotion. But takeup manageable one. So don’t run away from anxiety in the name
of spirituality.
3.8
How heart is transformed and cleansed from contamination by following Karma Yoga ?
1. Abide by the order
2. Engaged according to the modes one is in.
3. Contributes
As one is connected to Yoga i.e to VIshu one is sure to be purified.
When one does ones prescribed duty properly then ones maintenance will be taken care.
Eg: Rogues in the jails. They are also fed
Reasons why Akarmana not to be done by Arjuna:
1. It is unnatural, it won’t lead to purification.
2. It will disrupt social order as people will get mislead as they will become Hypocrite and
will not benefit oneself nor others
3. One will not be able to maintain ones body also.
Varna – body
Ashram – soul
We will have to do our worldly duties. So do prescribed duties.
But by doing activities one is bond then ??? follows next verse
3.9
Selfless Action performed for the satisfaction of Vishnu is far better then just cultivating
knowledge.
Untill heart is purified transcendental knowledge cannot manifest.
1st time Yajna is introduced.
There is a form and principle…..
Eg: YOGA ----- Form – sitting posture, Principle – Connection with the supreme.
Similarly Yajna has a form and principle. Form – fire sacrifice ahuti is made, Principle – sacrifice
Fire sacrifice is done – All demigods are accessed through Agni. He is the means. What is
offered to Agni goes to all Demi Gods. This is the Principle.
Material point it seems everything is lost but its not that. Eg: putting money and just getting a
simple credit card.
Here He tells about is principle. That is what I could have enjoyed I would give it for the sake of
Vishnu. So do ur work as a sacrifice then there won’t be bondage.
If one is not qualified for Karma Yoga then do Karma Kanda…. Next verse.
3.10
Why Yajna ?

 To acknowledge our dependence on God

 To regulate our senses
When creation was done then Yajna was arranged for the people to enjoy their desires.
Eg: Parents when child is born they arrange for the childs need.
Lord arranges for all the needs of living beings.
Animals act according to the instinct. We have the capacity to regulate our eating, sleeping….
So we have responsibility to discharge our duties. That is horizontal duties like family….. but
vertical duties not to be forgotten that is to Lord.
Through yajna our needs are fulfilled and we can harmonize with supreme.

3.11
How our needs are fulfilled through Yajna ?
Science is a map. It’s a tool. People say u r scientific u can’t believe in God. But this is
unwarranted. Criticism is to atheism. Science can be used to look at the world. Reincarnation if
science is to used to study then it will lead to spirituality. Past life memories, NDE etc are not
without proof.
Neither prove nor disprove the existence of God. Design is so complex it didn’t happen by
chance.
Rain – evaporate and condensation so simple phenomena but when tried in lab so difficult to
do it.
Artificial rains imaginary gains and real pains. When they say artificial rain its not that artificial
rain is created. Its simply coulds in the sky. Some how they are not pouring so certain chemials
are put in the clouds so the rains comes down. This is called clouds seeding. Only pre-existing
clouds are condensed so the rain comes down. Even in this the mechanism is so complex.
Control is not where the clouds will rain down. Amount of water present in the clouds is not so
much so even the countries like America consider it to be economically viable. Its not
productive. We can’t produce when clouds are not there, quantity of rain, where it will pour so
where is the control.
It is miracle of technology how clouds are formed. Cloud are water tank which is air craft proof.
Made from most ordinary raw material – dust and water. PVT is maintained, rains fall.
Automatically doesn’t mean absence of the controller but it simply means the absence of the
awareness of the controller. Eg: Toy automatically controlled through remote, 5 star hotel door
opens automatically, but there is controlled program, there is a controller which we r not
aware.
Mechanism is complex and we are not aware. Scientific and scriptural explanations are
complimentary not contradictory. They work together.
Scriptures don’t go too much in details with the material mechanism but the person who
oversees the mechanism.
we can understand nature in 2 ways
1. Supplicate : one we pray to demigods – for bounty Gangs of peoples staying in forest
and they see a water supply pipeline. They may go to the Government and apply for
waters supply needs. The Govt will see if these are tribal nice people it will arrange for
the water pipeline for them. This is supplicative
2. Manupulation – We focus on the mechanism, read and change the mechanism. Eg:
Gangs of thieves staying in forest and they see a water supply pipeline. They decide to
make a hole in the pipeline and put our pipe to get the water. This is manupilative ways.
So in artificial rains they know the mechanism and trying to manipulate it. People have also
clouds property rights this is manipulative, interfering the process of nature is manipulative and
understanding the higher being and harmonizing with them is supplicative.
There is a mechanism for the water supply it doesn’t mean there is no authority.
We are always dependent on nature. We take everything from the nature – sun, raw material,
grains etc. nothing is provided automatically by nature.

What produces rains is when we harmonize with God. Consciousness affecting nature. It
controls nature. Eg: New age gardener findhown community in Scotland which produces
amazing flowers in sandy soils.
Understand there are higher beings and harmonize with them then we can live happily.
Yajna is the means to harmonize. Method of exchange can be different but the principle of
exchange is same. We put money and get credit card. Yajna are paying taxes to universal govt.
These are the means. Similary robber in forest 2 or 3 if they say we will pay the taxes out of 100
then there is less chances they may get the supply but if the whole community accepts that
then its possible. Similarly some chants it may come and may not depending upon the mass
karma of the people out there. We don’t do yajna to counteract the actions of karma. Our goal
should be to stop doing bad karma. Our focus is glorifying the SPOG so people may harmonize
with universl govt.

3.12
Are demigods dependent on the yajna of the humans on earth.
Its like saying America is dependent on Sumeria. Eg: Indra becomes angry becoz he feels
disrespected. Sati become angry not becoz Shiva will die as now he share of Yajna is taken away
but becoz he was disrespected.
When guests come we offer garland, its not that he will die if not provided garland but it is to
respect him. Similarly the performace of Yajna is necessity for them but it is way to respect
them. Just like if guest come and we don’t respect them then its offensive from our side.
Similarly when we don’t offer yajna to them then it is offensive. They r not dependent on us for
their nutrition.

3.13
In every culture there is arrangement for acknowledgement of the higher being.
When the food we offer we acknowledge Krishna then the sin is removed by him when we talk
about Prasad there are different levels. Like the grains are cultivated by devotee farmers, grains
are transported by devotee, cooked and served by devotees.
Prasad is not the food that is offered to Krishna but food cooked to offer to Krishna. Intensions
is important. Vegetarians don’t purifies us but certainly it is minimizing our sin. So offer to
Krishna.
As devotees we apply this priniciple of Yjan for us is we take Prasad.
