TRAINING MODULE
One Million Trees and Beyond Project

Title: ”Gulayan, at Malinis na Bakuran Tungo sa Luntiang Paaralan”

Focus Areas: Gulayan sa Paaralan and Ecological Solid Waste Management for Schools
Duration: 2 days (including practicum)
Date: November 26-27, 2015
Venue: Salikneta Agrivet Farm, De La Salle Araneta University, Bulacan

Background

In support of De La Salle Philippines’ (DLSP) initiatives for a greener and more sustainable
environment, De La Salle University through its Center for Social Concern and Action and the
Campus Sustainability Office partnered with the Department of Education (DepEd) for the
revitalization of NGP programs which include Gulayan sa Paaralan and Ecological Solid Waste
Management for Agricultural Purposes programs of the public schools as part of DEPED – DLSU One
Million Trees and Beyond Project (OMTB) partnership

The DEPED – DLSU OMTB partnership seeks to promote environmental stewardship values among
the different sectors of their respective institutions as well as the restoration of the integrity of
natural ecosystems through the setting up, propagation and planting of native and endemic tree
species under the Gulayan sa Paaralan programs of the different participating schools.

Training on setting up nurseries for native and endemic tree species has been conducted last year as
part of the capability-building efforts of the partnership. Seeing the need to revive the school garden
to which the tree nurseries have been tied-up with as well as recognizing the significance of
promoting the ecological management of solid wastes in the project (e.g. recycling of waste
materials for use in the school garden and nurseries, composting as a source of nutrients for the
seedlings and vegetables etc.), another training program has been deemed relevant and necessary.

Objectives

Upon completion of the 2-day training module on Gulayan sa Paaralan and Ecologcial Solid Waste
Management for Schools, the participants are expected to:

1. Develop and implement an urban vegetation and ESWM plan for the school;
2. Apply concepts and practical knowledge learned from the training into the day-to-day life at
home, in school and in their respective communities;
3. Identify significant factors (e.g. scientific, economic, social, environmental factors, etc.) that
contribute to the successful running of a gulayan, ESWM and composting program

4. Increase agricultural productivity of the school garden by developing an agricultural
management system that is suitable to their area and local crops;
5. Provide comprehensive hands-on venues for the proper execution and maintenance of the
gulayan program which may serve as laboratory for home economics and practical arts
subjects;
6. Help support feeding program through the production of locally grown vegetables; and
7. Foster the participation of other key stakeholders within the school and the immediate
community to promote inclusive growth.
