Final Version Due: 11:59 PM 11/07/2018 Unit 4 Vaccine Brochure Assignment

In order to learn about the purposes, benefits, and risks of a variety of vaccines, as well as how new vaccines
are made, each group will research a disease caused by a particular microbe and the vaccine that is currently in
development to prevent the disease or reduce its symptoms. You will need to compile and merge the writing
of each member of your group into one brochure with a file format that can be uploaded to the assignment
dropbox link on eLC-New. These formats include: Microsoft word (.doc, .docx), Open Office (.ord) or pdf (.pdf).

Due Date: November 7th, 2018 11:59 pm

Each group will produce an interesting and informative one-page brochure about the disease and a new
vaccine under development. Your group may choose any of the following:

• Anthrax - BioThrax • Epstein Barr • Norovirus

• Botulism • Japanese Encephalitis • Ricin
• Chikungunya fever • Heliobacter pylori • Shigella
• Cholera – Vaxchora • Hepatitis B • Staphylococcal aureus

• Dengue Fever • Marburg Virus • Tularemia
• Ebola • West Nile for humans

Please use whatever format and layout you find appealing, but it needs to fit on one page (front and back).
This is a group assignment so you can split the research according to the first 4 elements describe below, then
every group member needs to review and have input on the entire brochure! You may then wish to assign two
group members for creating the format, and the other two for editing the content and submitting the work.
Your group can earn points as indicated below, as well as 2 pts for creativity, originality, and visual appeal. 16
points total.
1. Identify the type of microbe (bacterium or virus) and describe the disease symptoms that can be
caused be it, including: (3 pts total)
a. Typical symptoms and why they have decided to produce a vaccine rather than conventional
treatment.
b. Serious complications and how common they are, and
c. Whether serious complications are an issue only for certain individuals (e.g., children, immune
compromised individuals).
2. Identify the effect of the disease on human populations, including: (3 pts total)
a. The most recent number of reported cases per year in the US and worldwide, and
b. The projected number of preventable cases after the vaccine becomes available.
3. Describe the name and type of vaccine that is being developed (live attenuated, killed or inactivated,
toxoid, other?), including: (3 pts total)
a. If there are different kinds vaccine preparations under development and testing.
b. The stage of testing for the vaccine (phase I, II, III, etc)
c. What antigen was used to develop the vaccine and what evidence is there that the vaccine is
working?
4. Describe the individual level outcomes expected of the vaccine, including: (3 pts total)
a. Whether the vaccine will be able to prevent disease or reduce the risk of serious
complications,

b. The proportion of vaccinated persons who are protected from disease or from serious illness,
c. The side effects associated with the vaccine so far, and how common side effects are (i.e.,
reported frequency of different side effects).
5. Visual appeal (2 points)
6. References: (2 points total). These can be on a separate page of your document if you wish.
a. You must cite the source and year of the publication within the text for each piece of
information you provide.

or Chicago style referencing, but please use a single style to throughout. For instructions and
examples, see: http://www.wikihow.com/Cite-Sources

• Communication (responded to texts and emails, shared individual strengths & weaknesses, checked
and shared what has been completed regularly, asked for feedback from the group about their
contribution, expressed thoughts openly including concerns and appreciation).
• Learning support (asked good questions, offered solutions to problems, came up with good ideas,
helped explain concepts to others).
• Behavior (enthusiastic, helpful, good attendance, met deadlines, volunteered appropriately during
class and group meetings outside of class, completed fair share, encouraged others by praising what
has been done.)
