SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY – FLOOD CONTROL AND DRAINAGE – SECOND SEMESTER SY.

2019-2020

Long Quiz in Flood Control and Drainage Engineering

1. Design a trapezoidal drainage channel which will outfall into a stream assuming reasonable data
if required. The design storm duration is 1 hour with a Tide Lockage Period of 480 minutes. The
rugosity coefficient is 0.025 with a longitudinal slope of 15 cm in every kilometer.
Rural Area 10 sq.km.
Semi-Urban 5 sq.km.
Total Catchment Area 15 sq.km.

2. Neil Zhandonn Versola recorded the average rainfall intensities of Italy, Spain. During this
period, the whole Italy with an area of 600 hectares is waterlogged. Being the assigned
engineer, design a drainage canal to eliminate the problem assuming reasonable data if
required. The flow velocity must not exceed 0.75 m/s and assume a side slope and coefficient of
runoff to be 1.5:1 and 0.60 respectively.
January 116 mm/day July 35 mm/day
February 125 mm/day August 93 mm/day
March 99 mm/day September 150 mm/day
April 13 mm/day October 129 mm/day
May 22 mm/day November 150 mm/day
June 105 mm/day December 142 /day

3. Given the following details, design a dike/levee that can protect the community from the
devastating effect of the flood. Sketch your design with its dimensions.
