1.0 INTRODUCTION

This assessment plan has been prepared in Energy and Production Engineering
Department for Heat transfer Module. Assessment of this module is based on the
learning outcomes stipulated within the UQF curriculum reflecting on student’s ability to
show competences that involve application of knowledge and skills for his/her level.

The plan was to be used for semester II in 2019/2020 academic year. The assessment
is effectively done after the student has gained knowledge/ competence based on
training programs.

3. EXAMINATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Duration, Number of Questions, Marks Distribution and sections

(a) The duration of examination will be three hours


(b) End of semester examination will carry a total of six (6) questions. Section A two
(2) questions student allowed to attempt all of them and Section B four (4) questions to
attempt only three (3) and Test 1 will carry a total of five (5) questions a student
allowed to attempt all of them. There will be practical assignment to accomplish
continuous test (CA)
(c) CA carried 40% and SE will carry 60%.

4. LEARNING CONTENTS
Modes of Heat Transfer: Conduction, convection and radiation.

Steady state conduction: The plane wall, cylinders, heat – source systems,
conduction – convection systems, fins and thermal contact resistance, two –
dimensional heat conduction, numerical method for two-dimensional, conduction –
finite difference.

Unsteady-state heat conduction: Lumped – heat capacity system, transient heat


conduction, convection boundary conditions, and multiple dimension systems.

Principles of convection: Viscous flow, in viscid flow, boundary layers, tube flow,
high-speed flow.
Forced-convection Heat Transfer: Empirical relations for pipe and tube flow, flow
across cylinders and spheres, flow across tube banks.

Natural convection Heat Transfer: Surfaces

Radiation Heat Transfer: Radiation properties, radiation shape factor, blackbody


radiation, solar radiation and view factors.

Heat exchanger: Overall heat transfer coefficient, heat exchanger design


considerations.

Application: air coolers

INTRODUCTION

This study guide gives a brief explanation on how the module Heat transfer will be
conducted throughout the semester

A. ORGANIZATIONAL COMPONENT:

The module will be conducted in a semester bearing the following essential sub
components

1. AIM OF SUBJECT

To introduce students the fundamental concepts of Heat transfer that will form basis for
more advanced displines in mechanical engineering filed

2. TREATMENT
The module will be conducted through lectures, tutorials, and field trips to provide
the opportunity for the learner to gain firsthand experience
Lectures shall be conducted to introduce principles of heat transfer. Tutorials shall
be conducted to develop and stimulate independent and team problem-solving
skills.
