The U/V Guard picks-up when the voltage in all 3-phases has fallen below a level defined by
the U/V Guard Setting
With the U/V Guard picked-up, each of the voltage dependent protection elements can be
individually inhibited from operation
Usually the setting defines a voltage level at which the system can be considered ‘Dead Line’
Not Quadrature connection so no need to allow for 90° Phase Shift when determining
Directional Angle Setting.
The Characteristic Angle will be determined by the Source, Line and Fault Impedance.
Example:
Expected fault angle is -45°
(Residual Current lagging Inverted Residual Voltage)
Set Directional Characteristic Angle to -45°

• Char Angle setting
Defines the Characteristic Angle
• Minimum Voltage setting
Defines the Minimum Voltage level for which operate direction is controlled
On networks comprising very long lines, where the fault current will be limited by the reactance
of the line prior to the relay, it is sometimes difficult to correctly grade the protection
However a drop in the voltage is a good indication that an in-zone fault is present
The presence of a voltage dip, where the voltage is smaller than VCO Setting, can therefore
be used to make the Overcurrent settings more sensitive. Each element has its own multiplier.

Supervision Functions - Circuit-Breaker Fail (50BF)
• If the current has still not fallen below this level after
50BF-2 Delay the 50BF-2 output is energised Trip
Current reset time - the delay between the current falling below
the 50BF Setting and the element detecting this - is < 30ms
If a failure occurs in all 3 Phases of a Voltage Transformer, then PPS Voltage will fall below
expected levels (< 60VTS Vpps)
However this could also be due to a ‘close in’ fault and so PPS Current must remain above
minimum load level (> 60VTS Ipps Load) BUT below minimum fault level (< 60VTS Ipps)
Operation is again subject to 60VTS Delay to prevent operation for transitory effects
Alternatively a 3 Phase VT failure can be signalled to the relay via Binary Input Ext Trig 60VTS
taken from the Trip output of an external MCB
Detects the presence of high levels of current at the 2nd Harmonic power frequency
Protection Elements can be individually selected to block when Magnetic Inrush condition
detected
Phase
Blocking only occurs in those phases where Inrush is detected
Large, Single Phase Transformers – Auto-transformers
Cross
All 3-phases are blocked if Inrush is detected in any phase
Traditional application for most Transformers but can give delayed operation for Switch-
on to Earth Fault conditions

The Auxiliary Voltage is measured via the linear d.c. analogue circuit on the dc/dc Converter of the 7SR224
Controller.
The health of the charger and battery are monitored via the Float voltage value at 1 second intervals.
The health of the capacitor charge converter and the capacitor voltage is monitored externally to the 7SR224
by the SDR in the monitor mode.
The capacitor Voltage is measured by the 7SR224 via external voltage level detectors, these present the
capacitor voltage as a State table on two Binary Inputs.
The Controller initiates a controlled capacitor test sequence 30 minutes after a successful Battery test.
• These are per pole and counted. User translates the number of each type into system indices
of the SARFIx rates per customer per 30 Days.
• 70% / 120% are typical Sag/Swell values which the plant of the majority of customers will
ride through.

Control Functions - Recloser Cycle
I (primary current)
Protection settings
2 x Fast 2 x Delayed (& High Set) Delayed & High Set
Most Overhead Line Faults are Transient earth Faults i.e. non-damage arcing faults induced
by Lightning impulse / Tree growth. Most of them are transient arcing Earth Faults with
Network Power follow-through maintaining the arc :
• 80% will be cleared by a single Instantaneous (Fast) Trip followed by a short Dead Time
and Reclose sequence
• After a TRIP the Line must be left Dead before Reclose i.e. Controller applies a Reclose
Delay, so that ionised gasses can dissipate and hot metal can cool down to prevent re-
striking of the arc
• A further 10% of faults will be cleared by a second Instantaneous (Fast) Trip followed by
a longer Dead Time and Reclose sequence
⇓ These will be cleared by either the first or second Instantaneous INST (Fast) Trip
⇓ The first sequence(s) of Instantaneous INST (Fast) Trips should clear temporary faults
with no respect to grading
If this is not successful, delayed protection will be applied which includes grading.
In case of permanent fault when the first INST trip(s) were not able to clear:
Protection devices apply Inverse Time Current Curves (TCC) or DTL and work in-conjunction
with other devices i.e. Fuses, to provide graded Current ~ protection operate time.
The upstream device closest to the fault is set by User such that it operates fastest.
Instantaneous Trips are set to operate at typically 150% for Phase faults, 50% for Earth Faults
and 5% for Sensitive Earth faults.
Delayed Trips may be set at the same or higher settings but the operating delay characteristic
is set to co-ordinate by Inverse Time ~ Overcurrent grading with other Protection devices or
Fuses.
Grading margins are typically 350 ms, clearance times increase upstream.
A typical sequence would be 2 Instantaneous (Fast) Trips followed by a Delayed Trip &
Lockout:
• When a fault occurs, the relay will Trip Instantaneous and then reclose
• If this does not clear the fault, the controller will trip again applying second dead time
• If this still does not clear the fault, the fault is presumed to be permanent and the next
Trip will be Delayed and set to grade with other downstream devices.
• The last Delayed Trip when it occurs will Lockout the ARC sequence, leaving the
recloser OPEN and prevent further AutoReclose.
Since large fault currents could potentially damage the system during a prolonged ARC
sequence, the Delayed Trip normally has associated HighSet Elements operating in parallel.
Settings to identify which protection elements are High-sets (lpick up level and number):
• 79 P/F HS Inst Trips, 79 E/F HS Inst Trips
• 79 P/F HS Trips to Lockout, 79 E/F HS Trips to Lockout

79 P/F High Set Trips: combination of 50-1, 50-2, 50-3, 50-4
Ditto for Earth Fault Shots and Sensitive Earth Fault Shots.
The Instantaneous (Fast) Characteristic can thus be a fast 51 curve from either IEC or ANSI Standard
curves or one of a number of Industry Standard ‘Legacy characteristics’ which match say an existing
Hydraulic, Oil, Recloser Characteristic.
This allows a user exception flexibility in selecting and setting the required characteristics in order to achieve
optimum Grading with other ‘Instantaneous’ and ‘Delayed’ devices on the Network.

(79 Extern Deadtime 1 – 4)
(79 Extern Prot’n Trips To Lockout = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
This independent sequence allows the Relay to provide an Auto-Reclosing function for an
external protection or for an internal Function. For example Auto-Reclosing could be initiated
following an external Distance or Current Differential Protection high-speed Trip in which case
at some point in the sequence it could be advantageous to block the tripping of the External
protection scheme and allow the Overcurrent Delayed time Elements to operate. Or the
External Shots sequence could be initiated from an internal function such as an UnderVoltage
Element.
A common Reclaim timer is started after each Reclose operation, if a fault re-appears during this time then
the current sequence is continued and the next protection in the sequence is applied. If the Reclose is
successful and the Reclaim Timer expires without a protection trip, a fault appearing after this will start a new
sequence.
79 Retry Attempts and 79 Retry Interval allow repeated close attempts if Circuit Breaker fails to close –
status determined from CB auxiliary switches.
Close attempt can be temporarily blocked by Binary Input Block Close CB until Circuit Breaker is ready.
Recloser will go to Lockout if block is applied longer than the Reclose Blocked Delay applied at the end of
the deadtime.
ARC Lockout can be reset by a Binary Input or automatically, if selected by Reset LO by Timer, after set
time delay Minimum LO Delay
79 Cold load Active. When set to OFF the Auto-Reclose will perform a full sequence when Cold Load is
active. If set to Delayed, when 79 Cold load Active then all Inst protections are blocked.
Each relay in a radial network would normally be set with the same Instantaneous and Delayed
sequence of Trips
The recloser closest to the fault (D) would step through its Instantaneous Trips in an attempt to
clear the fault. If unsuccessful, the recloser D would move through its sequence to its Delayed
Trip.
The other reclosers in the network (A, B and C) will recognise the sequence of Pick-up
followed by Current switch-off as downstream Instantaneous Trips and AutoReclose and would
therefore keep their Shot Counts in step and advance to their Delayed Trip.
On the next Trip all reclosers will be performing Delayed Trips and will Current grade such that
the recloser closest to the Fault (D) will clear the fault and Lockout.

Voltage is restored to un-faulted healthy section by back-feed from healthy feeder. After fault,
B will open after LOV for x secs, NOP will then close after detecting LOV for x+y seconds and
back feed the healthy section. Delays must grade with full AutoReclose sequence. Other
Reclosers can be incorporated in series between B and NOP.

ISSUES:
Pole scatter since three Single Pole Recloser mechanisms will be used
Controller must perform pole by pole monitoring of CB’s
Multi-Pole faults - must execute simultaneous sequences
Multi-Pole faults - must align sequences
Earth faults – no pole specified – 3P Trip
In MODES B and C, all faults above ground minimum trip and below phase minimum trip will
result in three - phase tripping. Phase and ground also share the same sequence
position. As the sequence position advances, the phase and ground TCC’s advance.
For faults above phase minimum trip, the Form 5/Triple - Single control only trips on the
phase(s) above minimum trip operating on the phase or ground TCC, whichever is
faster. Each ground sequence and TCC timing will advance with the appropriate phase
sequence for faults above phase trip.
