Second Semester 2015/2016, Mechatronics System Design, 0908531
Dr. Lutfi Al-Sharif
Mid-term Exam, Monday 28th March 2015, 09:30-11:00

Name:
Registration Number:

Use the following constants if needed:

Acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 m·s-2

Mechatronics (20 marks)

1a. What is the definition of Mechatronics? (8 marks)
1b. Draw a detailed block diagram of a general mechatronic system, showing
the types of inputs and outputs, the type of system dynamic models, the
details of the actuation system and the demarcation (‫ )ﺧﻁﻭﻁ ﺍﻟﺗﻘﺳﻳﻡ‬between the
physical world and the electrical world.(12 marks)

User Requirements Specifications (20 marks)

2. You are required to develop a detailed user requirements specification for a
3D printer. The 3D printer will be used to print parts of a car using a polymer.
List 10 user requirements for the 3D printer and specify required values for
them. (20 marks)

Actuator Sizing: An Elevator System (40 marks)

3. You have to select a suitable motor for an elevator system using the torque
required (a figure of it is shown in the next page). The elevator car with the
passenger load weighs 3000 kg. The counterweight weighs 2450 kg.
Assume a forward gearbox efficiency of 75%, a reverse gearbox efficiency of
45%, a gearbox reduction ratio of 1:29 and a sheave diameter of 630 mm.
Assume that the sheave has inertia of 6 kg∙m 2. Ignore the inertia of the
gearbox. (40 marks)

a) Find the required torque from the motor in order to achieve an upward
linear acceleration of the elevator car of 1 m/s2. (20 marks)
b) When the motor is moving the elevator car downwards at constant
speed, what is the torque that is imposed on the motor. (5 marks)
c) If the rated speed of the elevator is 1.6 m/s, what is the required rated
speed of the motor? (5 marks)
d) What would the torque required from the motor be had no
counterweight been used (10 marks)?

Electrical Motor Mounting Methods (20 marks)

4. Electrical motors have to be mounted when coupled to their loads.
Discuss in detail the two methods for motor mounting, where each method is
used and their advantages and disadvantages.
