Expression Module

Project Plan
Lauren Johndrow, 07/05/2020

Description

For my future career, I am planning on being an Elementary school teacher. I

have many visions of what kind of teacher I want to be as well as what my classroom
will look like. As for the kind of teacher I want to be, my goal is to be supportive and
culturally inclusive. I would like to be able to create connections with my student’s
parents and recognize what kind of life they live outside of school. My students should
feel as though they can come to me with issues they may be experiencing even if they
are occurring outside of the classroom. My classroom will be community-based. I will
show students the importance of community and creating positive relationships with one
another. My curriculum will be culturally responsive in order to include all of my
students. I will expect the most out of my students yet provide fun classroom activities to
help promote a love for learning.

Project Medium (Multimedia)

My multimedia project will be an infographic. This infographic will be visually

pleasing and contain several main concepts that I want to implement into my
professional goal. These sections will include community, support, equity, hands-on,
relationships, and cultural responsiveness. In each of these sections, I will be explaining
the definition of each one as well as giving an example of how I can implement it. I
chose this particular multimedia element because it has all of the information in one
place and allows me to get straight to the point. I also think it is a great way to get out of
my comfort zone and practice using my creativity. It may come in handy for my future
classroom.

Potential Benefits of Multimedia

There are multiple benefits to using an infographic. First off, they are eye-catching. You
can include different images and colors in order to draw attention. The human brain
often processes visuals better than just text. Second, they make the creator look
professional. What could be better fitting for a project about my professional vision?
Thirdly, infographics are easy to read through as well as remember. This is not only
great for the reader but also for me to remember my professional vision in the future.
Lastly, they are an effective way to tell a visual story. Mine will be the story of how I
vision myself and my classroom in the future.

Potential Challenges of Multimedia

Although there are many benefits to using an infographic, I also expect some
challenges. One of these challenges may be having a hard time making it look well put
together. I plan on overcoming this challenge by trial and error. I can arrange the
images and text however many times I may need in order to make it look professional
and visually aesthetic. I can also play around with different fonts and colors to fit my
graphic. Another challenge I may face is condensing my ideas into the small text boxes.
Infographics are short and sweet. I have a big passion for my future classroom meaning
I could write a twenty-page essay on my ideas. However, I will not have much space to
explain my ideas. I plan on avoiding this issue by creating a brainstorm before I create
my project. I will choose different words to describe my visions and come up with one or
two short sentences to accompany them.

Artist Statement

In short, my professional vision for my future career is to effectively teach and support
my students while providing a safe and fun learning environment. My classroom will be
focused on community and open-mindedness. I will teach my students to accept every
culture, race, gender, disability, sexuality etc… through my curriculum. I wanted a way
to help myself and my audience bring my vision into a clear picture. I felt an infographic
would help me achieve this goal. It is a combination of images and words yet not too
long to where one could get lost and lose sight of the big picture. The infographic is an
effective way for me to put all of my ideas into one. I separated my ideas into six
categories. These include support, community, equity, hands-on, relationships, and
cultural responsiveness. The first idea, support, will help students feel safe and secure
within my classroom. I will do this by getting to know each individual student and
learning how to effectively interact with them. The second idea is community. I can
promote community within my class by assigning important jobs to each student and
helping them work together. I can teach students the importance of being kind to each
other and giving one another The third is equity. Equity is recognizing that every
individual is different and some have advantage over the other. In order to give students
a sense of equity, I will give students the right amount of support for them. This
especially applies to students who come from broken homes or have learning
disabilities. The fourth idea is hands-on learning. Hands-on is a good way to get
children to enjoy learning which in turn will lead them to a more successful schooling
career. An example of Hands-On learning is bringing music into the classroom or giving
students props in order to learn concepts such as adding and subtracting.
Relationships, the fifth element, means that I not only have a relationship with my
students but with their families as well. Cultural responsiveness is my last idea in my
professional vision. Cultural responsiveness, according to the National Center for
Culturally Responsive Educational Systems (NCCREST) is the ability to learn from and
relate respectfully with people of your own culture as well as those from other cultures.
This is one of the most important pedagogies that I want to apply to myself and my
future classroom. I can do this by reading books that come from different cultures,
teaching lessons about different areas of the world, and showing students with my own
actions to accept every individual with open arms.
