1. Complaining about or regretting present situations
The speaker regrets/complains about a present situation (vorbitorul regret o anumită situaţie din present pe care nu o poate schimba)
WISH ( that) + PAST SIMPLE
Examples:
I wish I knew the answer. – Îmi doresc să fi știut răspunsul.
Past Simple I wish I was/were more courageous. – Îmi doresc să fi fost mai curajos. ( was = more common in speech/ utilizat mai mult în vorbirea curentă decât în scris) The speaker regrets/complains about a situation in the past (în trecut)
WISH (that)/IF ONLY + PAST PERFECT
Examples;
I wish I hadn’t taken that boat yesterday. – Îmi doresc să nu mă fi
îmbarcat pe acel vapor ieri. If only I hadn’t believed her about the moving offer. – Îmi doresc să nu o fi crezut în legătura cu oferta de mutare. 2. The speaker complains about someone else’s behaviour. ( the speaker thinks that the other person should change it and knows the person can change it if he/she wants – vorbitorul regret comportamentul altei persoane, crede că acesta/aceasta ar trebui să –și schimbe comportamentul și știe că persoana o poate face doar dacă vrea.)
WISH (that) + would(n’t) + INFINITIVE
Examples:
I wish my friend would stop being so selfish whenever I ask her to
help others. – Aș vrea ca prietena mea să nu fie atât de egoistă atunci când o rog să-i ajute pe alţii. She wishes her brother wouldn’t take her CDs without asking for permission. – Ea își dorește ca fratele ei să nu âi mai ia CD – urile fără să ceară voie.
