Do you know how libraries begin? The first libraries existed about 8
000 years ago.
The Mesopotamians were people who wrote on wet clay tablets with a
wedge-shape stick called a cuneus. Hence their writing is known as cuneiform.
The tablets were baked and the rarest of them are placed in clay envelopes, stored
in palaces and temples and arranged in subjects. Such palace collections were the
first real libraries.
The libraries in early Egypt were in the temples and were under the care
of priests. The most famous library of ancient times was the library in Alexandria,
established about 300 BC. It had as many as 70 000 papyrus rolls which were
completely catalogued and classified under 120 classes.
It was the Romans who first had the idea of establishing public libraries.
Julius Caesar planned a system for public libraries and after him; the public
library was a Roman institution. When the Christian era began, libraries became
part of churches and monasteries. The monks read and copied books, and most
of the libraries that existed were due to their efforts.
By 1400, the University of Oxford began to organize its library, which is
called the Bodleian, is today the biggest university library in the world.

Tapirs live in swamps and streams. You can usually find them in jungles and forests of
Malaysia, Thailand, Sumatera and other tropical countries. They like to hide themselves
among the leaves and tall grasses. They sleep during the day and search for food only at

One day , Aizat went to his rich uncle and told him, “I heard that you know
the secret of making gold. Please tell me. I am very poor. My wife is sick and my
children are starving.”
Now, everybody knew how lazy Aizat was. He never planted any paddy on
his land. Instead, his fields were full of weeds.
Aizat’s uncle replied, “ I need one more item before I can make the
gold. Will you help me to get it?
Aizat agreed , of course. His uncle handed him a large pot and said, ‘You
must plant your fields with paddy. When the paddy is full ripe, put one grain from
each stalk into this pot. Bring me the pot when it is full.”
Aizat did as he was told. He spent all his time looking after his paddy plants
and collecting one grain from each stalk. In the meantime, his wife and children
quietly harvested the rest of the paddy and sold it.
