Phased Array

Collection Hardware Set-up

Sonatest VEO

Collection Hardware set-up

This presentation provides an explanation of the setup

procedure for a Phased Array inspection with the Sonatest
Veo

This scenario starts with a pre-configured example

configuration file, which minimizes the number of
parameters to modify, it is possible to start from any type
of setup and reconfigure parameters

- Press the power button to boot the unit

- Press the key to select the file list, use the click wheel
to navigate

- Select the file which matches the probe and wedge you are using

- Press to open the selected file

- With the selected pre-configured configuration file, parameters of the

‘Probe’ and ‘Wedge’ menus do not need to be modified

- Go to the ‘Part’ menu and adjust the parameters according to the sample:
- Material
- Thickness
- Sound velocities
- Weld geometry

- While adjusting the parameters, confirm with the 3D view that they match
the weld preparation.

- If a parameter turns red, it means the weld geometry is not valid and a
parameter needs to be adjusted

- Go to the ‘Scan’ menu and adjust the parameters accordingly:
- Focalisation
- Focal distance
- Angle Resolution
- Start and Stop angle
- Start and Range path
- Number of Elements (First, Last, Tx, Rx)

- In the ‘Geometry’ menu set the Index offset distance, which positions the
front of the wedge in reference to weld center.

- Go to the ‘View’ menu and set the
number of skips to see if the scan
covers the whole weld volume

- If you use an encoder, go to the

‘Encoding’ menu and select ‘Scan
Axis Only’ to activate the encoder

- Once your Set-up is ready, press , to start ‘acquisition mode’.

- Press and select the prefered lay-out

- Go to the ‘Calibration menu’ and perform the calibrations. If you use a

multi-scan set-up, each scan must be calibrated independently.

- After finishing each calibration wizard the appropiate indicator in the S-
scan image will turn to green.

- Save the set-up, including calibrations, press

Select ‘Setup’ in the Save Options window and save the file.

- Check the movement direction of the encoder:
Move the encoder in the scanning direction
and confirm scan position (bottom left
corner) is going up with positive number.
If not, invert the scanning direction in the
‘Encoding’ menu

- Place the probe on the right start position

(Scan start position and offset position)

- When ready to go, you can directly press as the encoder position will
be automatically set to the ‘Scan Start Pos.’ value.

- Once the area has been scanned, press and save the recorded file.
