IV. Procedure:
A. Readings
Directions: Read carefully the short narrative and note the words in bold.

Last February 7, 2020, I together with two student-writers from San Remigio National High School
joined the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC). We arrived in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan Valley at almost
12:00 midnight on February 8.
Despite the Covid -19 pandemic, the press con pursued since participants were already there in the
host city. For security purposes, participants and members of the different committees strictly followed and
adhered to quarantine protocols. Only 20 persons per region attended the opening ceremonies to make sure
that audience observed social distancing. Health personnel checked the temperature of participants upon
entrance to the stadium and sprayed on their hands disinfectant like alcohol and sanitizer. The same
procedures were done during the conduct of the different contests.
Since we only stayed in our billeting quarters after the contests because we are not allowed to tour
to the tourist spots in Tuguegarao City, I appreciated the warm accommodation and distinct hospitality of the
people in the host city. They shared us a home away from our homes.

Key Points:
The underlined words are regular verbs in the simple past tense. Simple past tense is used to talk about
things that happened or existed before now. It is often used with past time references (e.g. yesterday, two
years ago).

How do you form the simple past tense?

Regular past simple forms are formed by adding -ed to the infinitive of the verb.

start → started
kill → killed
jump → jumped

If a verb ends in -e, you add -d.

agree → agreed
like → liked
escape → escaped

If a verb ends in a vowel and a consonant, the consonant is usually doubled before -ed.
stop → stopped
plan → planned

If a verb ends in consonant and -y, you take off the y and add -ied.

try → tried
carry → carried

But if the word ends in a vowel and -y, you add -ed.

play → played
enjoy → enjoyed

There are three kinds of pronunciation: /d/, /t/ and /ɪd/. Look at the table below.

/t/ /ɪd/

arrived asked wanted

failed crossed decided

agreed stopped started
