Service Bulletin
1100 Series 61 lssue 1
High Leakoff of the Electronic Unit Injector July 2007

This service bulletin applies to the 1100 Series six and four cylinder engines models PJ, PK, NH and NJ.
There have been isolated occurrences of excessive fuel leakage past the electronic unit injectors on some
engines.
Accelerated wear on the delivery valve results in an increased leak rate. The high pressure pump cannot
generate enough fuel flow or volume in arder to compensate for the leakoff rates above a criticai value of 50
mi per 30 seconds for six cylinder engines anda criticai v alue of 35 mi per 30 seconds for four cylinder engines
of cranking ata speed of 150 rpm. ·
lf the engine turns over but the engine does not start, refer to Troubleshooting, Engine Cranks but Will Not
Start. lf this procedure does not solve the problem, then use the following test to assess the condition of the
fuelleak off system. The test can be conducted while the engine is stopped or with the engine running.

Electronic Unit Injector Leak Off Test

Cautions:
• Before beginning any work on the fuel system, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "General
Hazard lnformation and High Pressure Fuel Unes" for safety inforrnation.
• Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Cieanliness of Fuel System Components" for detailed
information on the standards of cleanliness that must be observed during ALL work on the fuel system.
The leak-off adapter kit (Perkins kit number 2761 0323) contains:
• Leak-off measurement adapter with a 1 metre hose
• Ten replacement dowty washers.
Tools required:
• 17 mm spanner
------------------------
• A suitable container for fuel
• A 0.5 litre capacity measuring cylinder
• Communications adaptar
• Laptop with EST installed .

7 Start the data log and crank the engine with the starting motor for 30 seconds.
8 End the data log.
9 Record the amount of fuel that has been collected in the container from the leakoff connector on the cylinder
head. Conduct the test three times. Calculate the average of the three values.
1O lf more than 50 mi of fuel h as been collected during the 30 second crank test, the electronic unit injectors
have high injector leakoff. lf this is the case, then replace the electronic unit injectors and the fuel injection Iines.
Return the original electronic unit injectors and the fuel injection !ines to the Parts Return Centre.
:X 11 lf less than 50 mi of fuel has been collected for the 30 second crank test, then the injectors do not have high
injector leak off. Refer to Troubleshooting, Engine cranks but Will Not Start in order to diagnose the problem.
,X Note: lfthe engine is running at 1000 rpm, if more than 720 mi offuel has been collected during the 3 minutes
crank test on six cylinder engines, the electronic unit injectors have high injector leakoff. lf the engine is running
at 1000 rpm, if more than 480 mi of fuel has been collected during the 3 minutes crank test on four cylinder
engines, the electronic unit injectors have high injector leakoff.
12 Remove the leak-off adaptor kit. lnstall the banjo bolt and two new washers to the fuel transfer pump.
13 End of the test. Send the data log and the leak-off measurements to technical_help@perkins.com.
