Hay por lo tanto una diferencia entre una teoría que nie
ga la existencia de la realidad en los relatos históricos y una
historiografía que es completamente consciente de la com
plejidad del conocimiento en el campo de la historia, aunque
sin por ello dejar de asumir que gente real del pasado tuvo
pensamientos y sentimientos reales que condujeron a acciones
reales que, dentro de ciertos límites, pueden ser conocidas y re
construidas. Quizás es cierto que, como lo ha expresado Patrick
Bahners, la ciencia desde Kant en adelante no ha poseído "cri
terios materiales de verdad".71 Pero Kant y el pensamiento cien
tífico y científico-social posterior, incluyendo a Max Weber, han
asumido que existe una lógica de la indagación científica que
puede ser comunicada y que, aun cuando no ofrezca criterios
materiales, sí ofrece estándares materiales para el examen del
mundo natural y humano. Sin embargo, incluso estos criterios
han sido cuestionados por algunos teóricos contemporáneos
de la ciencia.
Entre los teóricos modernos y contemporáneos de la ciencia
que han desafiado la noción de que la investigación científi
ca conduce a una comprensión progresiva de la realidad, es
necesario distinguir entre los escépticos más radicales como
Gastón Bachelard72 y Paul Feyerabend,73 por una parte, y los
relativistas históricos como Thomas Kuhn, por otra. Bachelard
y Feyerabend entienden la ciencia como una actividad poética
para la que no hay una lógica o método de indagación consis
tente. En su La estructura de las revoluciones científicas (1960),74
Kuhn argumentó que la ciencia no puede entenderse como el
