Maximum Marks: 100 Marks

Q. 1 (a) Explain the meanings of the terms ‘simple substance’ and ‘simple 8
compressible substance’. Also, describe the commonly employed
methods by which the thermodynamic data of substances are presented

(b) A vessel of volume 2m3 contain wet steam of quality 0.8 at 215oC. 10
Determine the masses of liquid and vapor present in the vessel.

(c) Determine the quality of wet steam at 200oC with a specific volume of 7
0.095 m3/kg.

Q. 2 (a) What is polytropic process; and derive equation of work done in 10

polytropic process.

(b) 0.1 m3 of gas is compressed form a pressure of 120 kPa and temperature 8
25oC to a pressure of 1.4 MPa according to the law PV1.4 = constant.
Determine the Work transferred (cv = 0.72 kJ/kg-K and R = 0.285 kJ/kg-
K)

(c) A piston-cylinder device contains a gas that expands by the relationship 7

pV = C. If p1 = 6 MPa, V1 = 0.02 m3 and V2 = 1.0 m3, determine the
final pressure and the boundary work

Q. 3 (a) For polytropic law (Pvn = C), show that for perfect gas; P1/P2 = (v2/v1)n 10
and T1/T2 = (P1/P2)(n – 1)/n
(b) Steam at a pressure of 3 MPa and with a temperature of 250oC is mixed 15
with wet steam at a pressure of 3 MPa and with a dryness fraction of
0.92 in the ratio of 1:2.5 by mass, Determine
(a) the quality of the steam mixture
(b) the density of the steam mixture

Q. 4 (a) 0.05 kg of steam at 15 bar is contained in a rigid vessel of volume 10

0.0076- m3. What is the temperature of the steam? If the vessel is cooled,
at what temperature will the steam be just dry saturated? Cooling is
continued until the pressure in the vessel is 11 bar, calculate the final
dryness fraction of the steam. Also, sketch the p-v diagram.

(b) One mole of air is compressed from pressure P1 and temperature T1 at 15

constant volume till its pressure is doubled. Then it is expanded
reversibly and isothermally to the original pressure, and finally restored
to the original temperature by cooling at constant pressure. Sketch the
path followed by the gas, on a P-V diagram and calculate the net work
done by the gas.
