Mechanics of Deformable Bodies

Course Description:

This course explains you about axial stress and strain; stresses for torsion and bending; combined stresses;
beam deflections; indeterminate beams; and elastic instability.

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this course, you must be able to:

1. Explain the concepts of stress and strain;

2. Compute stresses due to bending, shears, and torsion under plain and combined loading;
3. Analyze statically determinate and indeterminate structures; and
4. Determine the elastic stability of columns.

Study Guide:

The success in finishing this module lies in your hands. As Marian Angel, there is a need for you to
consider this mode of learning for it will offer new avenues of development. You are expected to accomplish
the module wholeheartedly. As you go through this module, your progress will be monitored by your
assigned instructor and feedbacks will be provided as well. For better understanding on what you should do,
below are sort of reminders for your guidance.

1. You need to have ample time in reading, watching video presentation and understanding the
thorough content of the module. If there is a need to re-read or re-watch it for better
comprehension, by all means do it so.
2. There is a need for you to manage your time wisely taking into considerations your other modules
from your other subjects/courses. Be aware on your given schedules per subjects so that you will be
accomplishing your tasks on time. To avoid confusions or delays, do not ask questions which are
answered in the study guide. In short, read first the entirety of the study guide for your guidance
and for better compliance.
3. If in case you do not understand what is stated in your learning module, re-read or re-watch. Spend
enough time in understanding the task/s and be resourceful. You may seek the help of your family
members but do not let them do the task/s for you. Remember, you are the enrolled student and
not them.
4. What you can do today, do it today and not tomorrow or any other day. As a Marian Angel, you
should learn the value of time and learning toward the path of professionalism. The assigned
schedule per subject will be announced and you need to follow it religiously.
5. Always believe that you can. Read the instructions given in every task before you start answering.
Do not settle for mediocrity; aim for excellence.
6. In every task/step you do in accomplishing the assigned module per subject, you need to make sure
that you did not miss anything. You have to double-check your answers before submitting them.
7. Your answers must be based on the given instructions per tasks. Do not deviate from the
instructions. You need to follow what is stated and try to re-read the instructions if confusions arise.
If in case there are queries which you think must be put into consideration, you may put your
message on the “comment box” in our Moodle Application so that your assigned instructor will
respond to you and others who do have the same concern will be enlighten as well.
8. Lastly, always do your best and be reminded that integrity is doing the right thing even no one is
watching.

EXPLAIN

This part of the module will give you now the ideas about stress. Thus, it is necessary to spend a
little of your time to understand things about load classification, normal stress, shear stress, bearing stress,
allowable stress design and limit state design. This will take _____ hrs. Please be patient in watching the
video presentation and you are advice to take note on the important things and concepts. If you are having
a hard time on understanding the presentation, you may pause or playback the video. You may also seek
other references and the assistance of your family member. If ever you still have difficulties, my lines are
open and you may message me. You can do it! If you are now ready, let us proceed.

CE22S – CE BSC 232b – Video 1: STRESS.mp4

Thanks for spending time for the lesson. I know you got tired while studying the unit. You are now
about to dig in to the lesson more and submerge yourself into it. Do you still have energy and time for the
next process? If yes, click next. If not, have at least 5 to 15 minutes break then go back to this unit. Please be
reminded that you only have 4 hours to complete the whole unit 1, so please manage your time properly.

ELABORATE

You are now about to do an activity which will enhance your ability to solve problems. This activity
will just take ______ hours of your time. Try to solve the following problems analytically and explore new
steps that might help you in solving problems. The solutions and answers will be posted after you tried
answering the problems. Once you have the answers try to re-solve the problems again for you to
understand it well. Remember, in order for you to understand the lessons well, you have to experience it
on your own repeatedly as much as needed, commit errors and learn from it. If you are ready, prepare ___
sheets of clean short bond paper draw the figures, solve the problems systematically and let’s begin.

CE22S – CE BSC 232b – Activity 1. STRESS.docx

Good job! Thank you for giving your best in doing the activity. This is a good start for you to really
understand the lessons well. Continue your perseverance and hard work. Please let me know what you
experienced while doing the activity or if you learned something new by writing in the comment box
below.
We are now about to gauge what you have learned in the first unit. Are you ready now to take a
quiz? If yes, please click next. If not spend time to rest for a little while and do some review for you to be
prepared on it, but please be reminded again to manage your time wisely for you to complete also the
units on your other courses.

EVALUATE

You will now be assessed on the knowledge you gained in the lesson. Once you are ready, you
need to prepare 3 sheets of short bond paper. Answer the following problems properly. Show your
complete solution and encircle your final answers. Make sure to write the correct units. Do your best and
be honest in answering. You will only be given ___ hours to finish the exam. Do your best! Let’s start.

CE22S – CE BSC 232b – Quiz 1. Stress

Great! I hope you did well. This helped you to evaluate yourself if you learned or not. Keep inspired
on continuing the course. Please let me know what you experienced while doing the quiz or if you
answered it well by writing in the comment box below.
