INFORMATION ON GAME COMPONENTS

Copies
The user of this version of the Venturers in Argent game is of course granted permission to
make copies of its components for personal use, as needed. However, permission is not
granted to make copies for commercial use or for resale.

Inventory
The following components are supplied for this game, as Adobe Acrobat .pdf files:
1. Encounter Display
2. Encounter Sheet
3. Rule Book
4. Site Maps
5. Standups #1
6. Standups #2
7. Venturer Chronicles
8. World Map

Printing
This game’s components have been optimized for output on a laser printer; however, any
decent quality printer should do, though its settings may have to be adusted a bit for best
results. The components have been supplied as a series of files (instead of one big file) so they
can more easily be printed on different types or colors of stock, or multiple copies can be made
of certain items.
If you are using a laser printer and “letter” size 8.5”x11” stock, make sure that these options in
the Acrobat print dialog box are all unchecked: “Shrink oversized pages to paper size”, “Ex-
pand small pages to paper size”, and “Auto-rotate and center pages”. They should all be
turned off because the files have already been optimized for letter size paper on a laser printer.
(”Shrink oversized pages”, in particular, will simply add the printer’s minimum margins to
already existing margins, reducing the page size whether such is actually needed or not!)
However, if you are using an inkjet printer that requirers a large bottom margin, or printing on
A4 size stock, use of the options may be in order – printing a test page from a file should give
you an idea of what is needed.
The World Map looks particularly good if printed on a specialty paper; parchment is a possibil-
ity, and “ivory granite” paper is especially nice. The Site Maps can also be printed on such
paper. If you decide to make use of the standups, they will work best if printed on some type
of card or cover stock – index stock is smooth and works very well. The two standups files can
be printed in different colors, ivory being good for the venturers, and something like green or
blue for the opposition, or perhaps a whole series of colors for each different type. The
Encounter Display can be printed on card stock too.

Assembling the World Map
The World Map is supplied in four sheets: Northwest (NW), Southwest (SW), Northeast (NE),
and Southeast (SE). These must be assembled together. There are any number of ways of
doing this, but double-sided tape can be used to provide a very neat and permanent result.
The basic idea is to overlap the sheets, attaching them with the tape – first putting together the
western half of the map, then the eastern half, and then assembling the halves together.
Step 1: Apply a strip of double-sided tape to the back of the NW sheet, so that is overlaps the
trim line at the bottom a little, as shown below. (To help in placing the tape, it might be a good
idea to hold the sheet up to the light and mark the position of the trim line on the back with a
couple of pencil marks.) Then cut off the overhanging ends of the tape.

Trim Line

Step 2: Cut the sheet just above the trim line. You can use a hobby knife and metal straight
edge for this, but a scissors will work fine as long as you are fairly careful. If necessary, a strip
of wax paper placed temporarily under the tape will keep it from sticking to things.

Step 3: Overlap the trimmed edge of the NW sheet onto the upper part of the SW sheet and
attach them together, as shown above. The little triangles at either end of the trim line can be
used to help line the sheets up. Just be careful not to press down hard over the tape until the
sheets are aligned properly.
Step 4: Assemble the NE and SE sheets together in the same manner.
Step 5: Finally, attach the two halves of the map together, trimming the western half and
overlapping it onto the eastern.

Assembling the Standups
Putting together the standups supplied for this game is something of a project, and of course
you can always use something else instead, such as miniatures, or even just cardboard coun-
ters. If you do decide to assemble the standups they work best if printed on some type of card
or index stock, as mentioned previously.
Note that each sheet of standups consists of three rows, with eight standups in each row. The
most efficient way to proceed is to work with a whole row at a time, using double-sided tape
for assembly.
To begin, cut the three rows apart from a sheet, leaving the excess at the sides still in place. It is
then a good idea to score each row along its fold lines, as shown below, using a straightedge
and something that will not actually cut into the stock – a dull table knife will work fine. This will
make folding the standups much easier.

Next, apply a couple strips of double-sided tape to the back of the row of standups, along one
side, as shown above. Trim off the overhanging ends. Then fold the row over, along the top,
and fold the base ends outward along the bottom, to produce the result illustrated below.

It would then be a good idea to attach a strip of thin cardboard or scrap card stock, 0.75 inches
wide, to the bottom of the row, using a strip of double-sided tape, to form a more rigid base.
Finally, the base can be folded up flat along the row and each individual standup cut away,
using a sharp scissors.
