Development
Definition of development
Development is the relatively
orderly adaptive changes that
people go through from
conception to death.
Development can be divided
into 4 categories:
o Physical development
(changes in the body)
o Cognitive development
(changes in thinking)
o Social development (changes
in the way individuals relate to
others)
o Emotional development
(changes in understanding,
expression and regulation
of feelings)
The 3 principles of
development are:
o People develop at different
rates
o Development is relatively
orderly and sequential
o Development takes place
gradually
Both nature and nurture
contribute to a child’s
development
