SUCCESSFUL FARMING ON A

SMALL PIECE OF LAND

BY

DR. NALUYIMA EMMA

THE NEXT GENERATION
• Uganda’s billionaires will not be car importers from Japan or Mobile phone
sellers on Giant Plaza on Kampala road but Farmers.
• “The Next Generation of Billionaires in Africa will be farmers”; Akin Adesina
President ADB.
• Of all businesses ever done by an African, its only farming that has not let
him down.
• In the 60s your parents grew coffee to take you to school.
• Nigeria got oil, Gold in S.A, all has not benefitted the African race.
• In US, it’s the farmers that are rich and the poor work for government.
• This is because we do farming the wrong way. We start farming late with
very little knowledge. When the MOF has drained your brains you will
retire into farming.
The Trend of Land
Ownership/Availability
• 1000 years ago, our great great grand parents owned villages and
hunted.
• 100 years ago, our great grand parents owned sq miles and farmed
with hoes.
• 50 years ago, our grand parents owned acres and farmed with oxen.
• Today our parents own sq meters, they do not farm, yet we have the
privilege of using tractors
• Tomorrow we shall own ft. Wont we eat??
TODAY
• With Modernity, we do farming using the brain, the smart way not
the muscle.
• It is not how much land one has that counts, but how much the
person earns from whatever piece of land that they own.
• To us, even a kg of soil is important or a cm of land is equally
beneficial.
• Take for example one can feed their cow for 270 days from only 9ft X
170 ft or 1sq meter can yield 18kg of fodder to feed one heifer.
• We can also harvest 10kg of onions from 1sq meter.
PRINCIPLES OF FARMING
• GENETICS
• FEEDING
• MANAGENEMENT
a) Bio-security
b) Housing
c) Welfare
d) Health
e) Records
f) Monitoring
g) Market (Quality, Quantity and Consistency)
My farm: One Acre Unlimited
• One quarter: raising pigs
• One quarter: raising cattle
• One quarter: growing matooke (cooking
banana)
• One quarter: producing fish, fodder,
vegetables and fruits

• Urea/manure
• Maggots (feed for fish and chickens)
• Earthworms and pesticide from vermiliquid
• Biogas

• And all of this before:

• …..pork
2nd Quarter: Raising

• Five zero grazed cows on 0.1 acre
• By using manure to enrich the soil 1 m2 can feed a
cow by planting maize for silage
• This is profitable!
• Each cow gives 20 litres/day, which can be sold for
Ug 7,320,000 over a year
• Dung is used for biogas
• Slurry from biogas is used as fertilizer

• An 8m X 15m area can have banana) and fruits

10 tanks each with 1000 fish

• 10,000 kg of fish harvested in six
months: 10,000 X 10,000 =
100,000,000/-
• The same space can yield 4,800kg
tomatoes with a value of 9,600,000/-
over six months
Key messages
• Small scale integrated livestock farming is feasible,
productive and profitable
• It has made a difference to my family’s livelihood by
supporting mine and my children’s education, providing
stable income.
• Research solutions need to be shared more widely and
training provided. I have been able to set up a school to
provide a foundation for Sons and Daughter of African
Farmers.
