4 INTERNAL ATTACHMENT REPORT

Internal attachment programs are offered by the information technology

department to undergraduate students in IT field, computer science and
related courses. The purpose of internal attachment creates the need for any
discerning student to create a clear picture of what has been done in the form
of a report. My involvement in this internal attachment, as a student was to
make sure that I acquire new knowledge and practical skills in IT dynamic,
improving my confidence in problem solving in real life situations. The
activities that were performed by student are discussed in details.

The importance of this internal attachment programs is to oriented student to

learnt more practical skills both in hardware, software projects and
networking. The report will help student to figure out the challenges he met
and new skills learnt during the internal attachment sessions. This report aims
to provide details of the course learnt by the student and the pitfalls during the
attachment period. The report outlined all the activities I undertook at
Information Technology department, the experiences I gained, the practical
skills acquired and the personal efforts. This report contains information which
I gathered during my internal attachment training in JKUAT for the period of
eight (8) weeks.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction to the study

Introduction/preliminaries
Many students at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology that
undertaking a Bachelor’s degree courses are mandatory to undergone internal
attachment for a period of eight (8) weeks in the field related to their courses.
Today, many university students were experiencing so many challenges when
they go for academic internships, and for that reason, some universities like
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has introduced
internal attachment in order to equip its students more skills and knowledge
before they go out for their external internship in the IT, computer science and
other related courses needed in the job market. Lack of internal attachment
offered by some academic institutions to the student had become a major
challenge to the students when they go for external internship. The objectives
of the internal attachments are to aided student to comprehend soft and hard
skills learnt during the course.

Purpose of the internal attachment

 To output the knowledge and skills learnt in lectures hall to a working

environment.
 To interpret the practical and theories acquired during the attachment
period.
 To allowed the student acquire more knowledge and skills in actual IT
working environment.
 To expose the student to know more on what he has not covered in
previous academic work of life.

Scope and limitations

The experience during eight (8) weeks period of internal attachment had
helped the student to achieve the objectives and goals of the internal
attachment.

CHAPTER TWO

Description of activities performed by student

Developing the mobile application

 Developing mobile application using Android studio and GenyMotion to

create the interactive user interface mobile apps.
 Running the created apps in the mobile phone to test whether it was
functioning and compatible to mobile devices.
 Linking the mobile application to the database, and run whether it will
be communicating.

Formatting and installing windows operating system

 Installation of windows operating system (Windows 7 Professional).
 Formatting and partitioning the hard disk drive
 Installation of anti-virus (Avast anti-virus) before Microsoft office
application programs.
 Installation of Microsoft office suite after the anti-virus update to
prevent harmful threat to the machine.
 Installing drivers pack solution to upgrade the missing drivers.
 Installation of the open source program such as Linux and configure it,
and learnt various commands of Linux.

8 INTERNAL ATTACHMENT REPORT

Diagnosing computer hardware failure

 Disassembling and assembling the system board/main board/ system

unit/ motherboard etc.
 Identifying the various components that made up the system board or
the motherboard such as power supply unit, CMOS, RAM, heat sink,
microprocessor etc.
 Diagnosing the component failure when starting up the PC computer,
and look for a solution of that failure.
 Installing networking interface card/ network adapter card on the
network slot in the system board.
 Blowing the PC computer and other peripherals to remove the dusks
using the blower machine.
 Troubleshooting monitors, scanners and printers.

Configuration of network

 Terminating the UTP network cables using the networking tools.

 Identifying the different types of network cabling such as unshielded
twisted pair cable and fibre optic cable.
 Identifying the various networking hardware components e.g. switch,
router, repeater, bridge, gateway etc.
 Identifying the networking topologies such bus, star, ring and mesh
topology.
 Terminating the network cables on the wall and onto the patch panel.
 Terminating RJ45 and test them using network cable tester.

Installing windows server 2019

 Installing windows server 2019 for the network administration.

 Installing the server roles such DNS, DHCP, ADS and configuring them in
order to be functioning properly.
 Troubleshooting the problems of the network hardware failure and
reconfigure them.
 Creating user’s login and how they should get access to the network
sharing resources such as printers and files.
CHAPTER THREE

Skills attained during internal attachment period.

 Learnt on how to terminate the UTP cable and network color coding
standard, crossover and straight through cables.
 Skills on how to developed the mobile application using Android studio
and GenyMotion.
 Knowledge on installation of windows server 2019, and how to configure
roles and clients.
 Knowledge of creating the database using a third-party software called
Xampp, and creating the database tables.
 Knowledge on monitors and printers troubleshooting.

Challenges encountered during the internal attachment.

 Lack of the internet access and electricity in some computer labs like
computer lab8 in the IT department.

CONCLUSION

The internal attachment scope mainly focused on computer hardware,

software, networking components and tools. The attachment course was
related to the field of study in Information Technology which relevant to the
skills and knowledge needed in the ‘IT’ dynamic. Skills on how to terminate
networking cables and also handled the hardware devices in ‘IT’ environment.
Knowledge on group contribution during the internal attachment also have
added value to individuals.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based the challenges and conclusions in this study, the following

recommendations are made:

 The Information technology department should therefore, install the

fastest wireless internet access points in all the ‘IT’ computer labs to
help students access the internet.
 The ‘IT’ department should purchase the genuine windows operating
system that are compatible for installation.
 Facilitators should incorporate into their assigned task programs so that
student may learnt the program in details.
 Students should work extra harder and utilized the IT available lab
resources accordingly.
