TEST 3 (Modules 5-6)
Reading
C Read the text and match the headings (A-F) to the paragraphs (1-5). There is one extra
heading.

A A Difficult Choice C Running out of Supplies E Setting off to Adventure

B A Heroic Rescue D Trapped on the Ice F Forced to Escape

1 The date was the 26th October 1914, and a ship called the Endurance was leaving Buenos Aires for the
South Atlantic. The goal of the expedition was to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic – the world’s
coldest and windiest continent. After a long and tiring journey, the Endurance and her crew, led by the
brave Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, finally reached Antarctica in December. However, they
had no idea that in the months ahead, their journey would become famous for reasons they could never
have imagined.

2 As the ship sailed through the ice, wild winds were blowing and the explorers were left numb from the
freezing cold. The ice became thicker and thicker, and although the crew bravely sailed further into the
frozen conditions, they eventually became stuck in the Antarctic ice. In freezing weather below -25 ºC,
Shackleton gave the order to abandon ship and set up camp on the ice. Here they struggled for ten
months, until the Endurance sank below the icy water.

3 Shackleton knew that it would be impossible to complete the expedition. To make things worse, on April
9th, the ice split in two, giving them no option but to take lifeboats to Elephant Island, 346 miles away. For
five long days, the explorers rowed through the bitter cold. Shackleton, thinking of his crew before
himself, gave one of his men, Frank Hurley, his gloves – suffering frostbite as a result.

4 When they reached Elephant Island, Shackleton quickly realised that the conditions were too extreme. It
was vital that his crew got help, and the nearest place was South Georgia. He made the decision to travel
out to sea in a small open boat with five other men, in one of the most incredible survival stories in
history.

5 For 16 days, Shackleton and his men rowed over 800 miles of open sea. Their journey was a constant
battle against the elements, as huge waves and freezing winds battered the tiny boat. Shackleton was
able to reach South Georgia and returned to Elephant Island where his men were waiting for him;
amazingly everyone had survived. Even though Shackleton never made it across the Antarctic, he will
always be remembered for getting his crew home safely.
