Quick Change Rim

(QCR) Systems
for the Cat® 785C,
785D and 789D
Mining Trucks

Caterpillar is pleased to announce the availability of the

Quick Change Rim system for the Cat® 785D Mining Truck.
The Quick Change Rim System is also available on the 785C
and 789D.

The QCR system is designed to improve mine site productivity

by minimizing downtime associated with tire servicing and to
improve safety for tire service personnel when changing tires on
large mining trucks. Compared to the standard fitment five-piece
rims currently offered, the QCR system provides improved safety
and fewer rim based remove/install procedures during tire changes.

Caterpillar offers the QCR system fitted to wheel positions

three and six and is available as an attachment option for the
785C, 785D, and 789D.

Traditionally, the only way to change the inside tires on the
rear axle of a mining truck was to remove the outside tires.
This process is time-consuming, and downtime results in a loss of
production. To overcome this loss, the Quick Change Rim system
Right Front was created. The QCR has a position specific outer rear rim with
separate dual bead seat bands and flanges. These components

over the outer rear rim, without the need to remove the outer rear
rim from the axle, thus improving safety and productivity.
• Reduced downtime – Machine downtime is reduced by greater

• Reduced manual handling and fatigue on tire maintenance
personnel – the need to use impact guns is dramatically reduced,
thus improving ergonomics of the tire change process.
• Reduced tire maintenance costs.
• Additional weight for these quick change rims is less than most
competitive quick change aftermarket rims. For example, using
the standard rim group as the base.
The 785 quick change rims are approximately 327 kg (720 lb)
incremental weight compared to 1134 kg (2,500 lb) incremental
weight for a leading aftermarket quick change rim group.
The 789 quick change rims are approximately 327 kg (720 lb)
incremental weight compared to 1542 kg (3,400 lb) incremental
weight for a leading aftermarket quick change rim group.
• Quicker tire change process will encourage more frequent
and effective tire rotations and inspections resulting in
improved tire life.
• Reduced potential damage to wheel retaining bolts, studs
and hubs – minimize stud and wheel station damage due
to improperly tightened wheel nuts.

The Cat QCR system will provide reduced downtime and Conclusion

Ordering Information – The QCR system will be available on the 785D in December
785C, 785D 2012, effective with serial number MSY00582. It is currently
available ex-factory on the 785C.
