CHAPTER l

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

The works and writings of Dr. Jose Rizal in our national identity awakening and

support towards a political identity associated with modern Philippines leading to a wide-

ranging campaign for political, social, and economic freedom in the Philippines. For this

research we’re going to tackle about our hero Dr. Jose Rizal and we do some research

where we can see that he deserve to be one of our heroes. Doing this research makes

others inform why Dr. Jose Rizal is a legend when in his time. Looking back to his works

in the past makes the Filipino’s proud. In this research you will see how he became a

hero, how people in the past respected him. We will see how good he is when it comes to

fighting other people by using his words, using his knowledge. He is brilliance;

compassion, courage, and patriotism are greatly remembered and recognized by the

Filipino people. Through his writings and works we know the truth behind the evil rule

of Spain that lead to know what our national identity in our country and it is also the

awareness of Filipino on how they treated the people during Spanish period. While his

writings and works have big impact in national identity which changes the nature of

Filipino identity. It can influence the writings of Dr. Jose Rizal in other country through

make a novel that similar Rizal’s writings and through his writings he exposed the

corruption and wrongdoings of government officials as well as the Spanish friars. Rizal

harshly criticized the Spanish colonial rule in the country and exposed the ills of

Philippine society at the time. And because he wrote about the injustices and brutalities

of the Spaniards in the country that make big impact in our national identity. In our

present time or so called millennial era, history does not give a big impact to millennial

people. Most are busy with the social media due to high and modern technology. What

interests more are the new things that are trending or "in". Few only interested and few

only knew about the history of our nation and the people involved who fought for our

freedom from the Spaniards. Most Filipino knew Jose Rizal as our national hero but few

knew about his writings, works and achievements during his time, his contribution to our

country by fighting for our independence through a non-violent weapon his pen. But

thanks to our government agency in education, life and works of Jose Rizal is included in

our school curriculum and students will have an idea of who Rizal was and how he

fought the friars through his writings.

Dickson and Deverensky (2006) maintain that addictive disorder and destructively

impacting young people academically, personally, socially, behaviorally and in their

families more than any other time in human history. It talks about effect that can destruct

in our life and even in family because it refrained outdoor activities with family and

friends because of harmful effect of being dependent on technology device.

According to Simmons (2008) some individual may become as obsessed with

obtaining the latest technology as with using it. It talks about the more improving the

technology, the students have more addicted and it may develop unhealthy lifestyle such

as poor time management and poor eating habits among the students. The study focused

the harmful effect being dependent on technology device of senior high school students

and the purpose of this study is to aware them about the harmful effect of being

dependent on technology device and to know them the use of technology when overuse it

can lead addiction and make it dependently on technology device and to encourage them

to lessen using electronic device such as computer that will lead being dependent on

technology device.

And they have many usage of technological devices that cause psychological

problems along with health problems may have a link to the high usage of devices that

they are not conducted like the study of Parry (2016) entitled ‘Addiction to technological

devices: Its effect on an individual’s health, lifestyle and social skills’. The study of Parry

(2016) the level of the usage has an effect on the addictive behavior of the individual

which in turn impacts their lifestyle, health and social skills and there may be other

factors that might have influenced the health and social skills are not conducted.

The present study plans to examine the time spent by the youth with their

technology devices and to critically assess the impact of the addictive use of

technological devices on

individuals.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to determine the Perceptions of Senior High School Students to

the Harmful Effects of Being Dependent on Technology Devices

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following question:

1. What is the profile of the respondent according to:

3. What are ways to prevent harmful effect of being dependent on technology

devices in student?

4. What makes technology addictive to students?

5. What may be suggested activity to lessen the harmful effect of being

technology dependent?

Significance of the Study

The findings of the study will be useful the following entities:

For the students. It is important to know the students to prevent harmful effect of

being dependent on technology devices and to learn new knowledge on what are the

possibilities that can harm if they are dependent.

For the teachers. It is important to the teacher for them to know on their students

act in school if they are dependent the students on technology devices.

For the parents. It is important to the parents for them to know and they are

better to guide their children in harmful effect and to give action to decrease this problem

of being dependent.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This part presents the gathered related literatures and studies that support and

supplement the topic being studied.

Conceptual literature

Groff et.al (2010) computers make it so easy to find answer that students barely

have to look for them this may be result in them having poor study habits and developing

a lazy attitude toward their education they would no longer rely on the tasks that are lent

by their teachers for them to study since they are already interested to study using the

computer. Even simple problems and homework that they need to answer they are some

seeking the assistance of computer already

Fioravanti, Dettore and Casale (2012) states that even though the prevalence of

internet addiction varies considerable from country to country developed research

indicates that internet addiction is predominantly associated to its social aspects

7

Guan and Subrahmanyam (2009) Tsai and Lin (2003) moreover contemporary

research does indicate than an established sense of identity, self and belonging is

negatively associated with internet addiction

Ayas and Horzum (2013) found that depression, loneliness and self-esteem can all

be indicates of problematic internet usage. (http://alfredadler.edu/sites/default/files/Stontz

%20MP%202015.pdf).

According to Howard et.al (2015) sadness and depression were common triggers

of intensive internet use and social media use was nearly universal and quite extensive in

the lives of students (http://alfredadler.edu/sites/default/files/Stontz%20MP

%202015.pdf).

Guan and Subrahmanyam (2009) internet addiction in students is detrimental to

their academics, family relations (because of the potential to hide excessive internet use

from parents) physical health (such as sleep depression) mental health issues (depression)

and finances (the accumulation of the internet expenses

According to Young (1998) addiction to technology is a habitual compulsion to

engage in using technology instead of using it to address life problems. They use

technology as a coping mechanism to avoid conflict. Long term compulsion can lead to

psychological problems such as insomnia, irritability and depression for example

compulsion to use technology in favor of rare and exciting life events such as parties or

vacations might signify addiction (http://ethesis.nitrkl.ac.in/5544/1/e-thesis_19.pdf).

Walsh (2012) it would have been a lot better if the drawbacks or the negative

impacts of the use of the digital services has negative impacts student should minimize

the use of these tools and should aware about its use (http://ethesis.nitrkl.ac.in/5544/1/e-

thesis_19.pdf).

Young (2004) excessive technology use may affect academic performance,

relationships as well as overall development among youth such as baffling technology

use has been identified as technology addiction and has many negative impacts on health

and social behavior (http://ethesis.nitrkl.ac.in/5544/1/e-thesis_19.pdf).

Young (2012) computers and related technology are essential to the learning

process in several ways. Although some people feel that the use of technology can have a

negative impact on the socialization and development of critical thinking skills of young

children and adolescents and may be misused by some instructor there are fundamental

and significant tools used in classroom and the workforce and foster greater

understanding diverse studies

Hagedorn and Young (2011) Because of the vast amount of research on

addictions related to substances such as alcohol and drugs and this paper will centralize

on the process addictions have with the internet their smartphones, facebook,

pornography and gaming (http://alfredadler.edu/sites/default/files/Stontz%20MP

%202015.pdf).

Kim (2013) examined the connection between overuse and aggression. A total of

2336 high school students (boys 57% and girls 42.5) in South Korea completed the

structured questionnaire and the proportions of boys who were classified field as severe

addicts and moderate addicts were 2.5% and 57.3% respectively. For girls the

corresponding proportions were 1.9% and 38.9%. Also this study determined smoking,

alcohol level of addictions were independently related with all aggressive characteristics.

Severely internet addicted boys showed higher scores in all aggressions characteristics

more than severely internet addicted girls, even though it was not statistically significant

in every characteristic. The conclusion of this study illustrates that aggression strongly

linked to excessive internet use in adolescents.

According to Young (1998) addiction to technology is habitual compulsion to

engage in using technology instead of using it to address life’s problems. They use

technology as a coping mechanism to avoid conflict. Long term compulsion can lead to

psychological or problems such as insomnia, irritability and depression. For example

compulsion to use technology in favor of rare and exciting life events such as parties or

vacations might signify addictions. Attitude changes in teens, sudden depression, loss of

self-esteem and problems in paying attention to study are often symptoms of internet

addictions. According to Young (1998) teens a particularly vulnerable to technology

addictions. Teens have poor coping mechanism when they face stress; they often chose

what is comforting to them, usually something easy to focus such as online videos or

social media sites. Also in the teen years, self-identity is uncertain. Most teen struggle to

understand how to present them by the mean time technology helps them in doing so.

Howard et.al (2015) found that the amount of time students are spending on the

internet daily ranged from five hours to 24/7 access due to the widespread use of mobile

devices like smartphones and tables with Wi-Fi and data coverage. Sadly , many students

observed that they could not truthfully distinguish between the length of the time they

spent on the internet for school work or work related purpose from those of non-

school/non work related purposes and some students described their constant use of their

electronic devices such as ‘ I feel like I’m on the phone all the time constantly checking ‘

or ‘if I’m writing a paper , then I’ve got my browser open , or I’m on my phone’ and

‘once its summer I’ll be on the internet like , an entire day

Regoniel (2012) elucidated a few of the negative consequences of the internet

such as addiction destructive and pervasive pornography , the loss of human touch ,

criminal activity such as phishing , scanning credit card theft and identify theft and the

abandonment of family (http://alfredadler.edu/sites/default/files/Stontz%20MP

Synthesis

The related conceptual and relate literature have a very close bearing to the

present study for the dealt with the harmful effects of being dependent on technology

devices of Senior High School Students in Tipas National High School (G7-12).

The study of Kim is similar to the study of Young, because they are both focusing

the overuse of technology that will lead addiction. Their study wants to pursue the

awareness of the harmful effects of being dependent on technology device. The

11

difference between the study of Kim and Young is classified internet overuse as addiction

and the symptoms of internet addiction are the changes of attitude.

The study of Hagedorn and Young is similar to the study of Howard et.al because

they are both focusing in the use of electronic device such as smartphones and internet

that will lead to addiction and some of students are spending on the electronic device that

have bad influence in study. The study of Hagedorn and Young is difference to the study

of Howard et. al

In relation of the study of Hagedorn and Young the process of addiction it could

find in the internet and smartphones. While the difference of study of Hagedorn and

Young in the study of Howard et.al. Facebook and other social media are not included in

leading addiction and only the internet and using smartphone are leading to be addicted.

Conceptual framework

The focus of this study was undertaken by the following conceptual framework

shown in Figure 1 which has three part process: the input, process and output. The first

box is the profile of the students, the effect of being dependent on technology devices to

students, the ways to prevent harmful effect of being dependent on technology devices in

student, makes technology addictive to students. The second box includes research

process where it shows data gathering procedure by means of administering survey

questionnaire to the senior high school student while the last box is output. It includes the

suggested program/activity to lessen the harmful effects of being technology dependent.

cause harm in our lives.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, subject of the study, data gathering

instrument, data gathering procedure, and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

The present study plans to examine the time spent by the youth with their

technology devices and to critically assess the impact of the addictive use of technology

devices on individuals. Descriptive research can be explained as a statement of affairs as

they are at present with the researcher having no control over variable. Moreover

‘descriptive studies may be characterized as simply the attempt to determine, describe or

identify what is, while analytical research attempts to establish why it is that way or how

it came to be and descriptive research is ‘aimed at casting light on current issue or

problems through a process of data collection that enables them to describe the situation

more completely than was possible without employing this method. In this essence,

descriptive studies are used to describe various aspects of the phenomenon. In its popular

format descriptive characteristics and behavior of sample population. (https://research-

methodology.net/descriptive-research/)

The aim of descriptive research it determines or identifies the problem in

describing situation. Through this method it easy to describe or identify the aspect of

phenomenon because the characteristics of descriptive it’s easy to analyze the problem

and it used to obtain information concerning the current status of the phenomenon to

describe ‘what exists’ with respect to variables or conditions in a situational and attempts

to collect quantifiable information to be used for statistical analysis of the population

sample. The researcher used the survey questionnaire to gather data from the respondents

and the sampling method that we used is stratified random sampling technique to

determine the distribution of respondents of senior high school students in Tipas National

High School.

Subject of the Study

The researcher choose Senior High School Student in Tipas National High

School as respondent because they more spending in technology device that cause

unhealthy lifestyle of being dependent.

The subject of the study is composed of Senior High School Students in Tipas

National High School (G7-12). It is divided into eleven ABM, Twenty-five HUMSS,

eighteen TVLE in Grade 11 students while the Grade 12 students is divided into nineteen

ABM, twenty-two HUMSS 1, twenty-five HUMSS2 2, twenty-three HUMSS 3. As

the whole the respondent will answer the questionnaire in this study. All of the

To gather the information, the researchers made used of the questionnaire as the

primary tool. The researchers gathered relevant information from several references such

as books and unpublished materials from the internet.

With the guidance of the teacher in Inquiries, Investigation and Immersion. The

researchers prepared a preliminary draft of questionnaire and presented it to the teacher

for comments and suggestions.

After the first draft was done, it was presented to the teacher for improvement.

The teacher gave her comments and suggestions regarding the problem. The researchers

incorporated the given suggestion of the teacher.

Validation of Questionnaire

The researchers prepared a letter of request for the validation of the instrument.

The researchers rewrote the draft, incorporated the corrections and suggestions and then

showed it to the teacher for approval. After the corrections were considered, the copy was

administered to the teacher in Inquiries, Investigation and Immersion.

Administration of the Questionnaire

After the approval of the teacher in Inquiries, Investigation and Immersion. The

researchers wrote letter of request and informed consent form then administered the

questionnaire. The researchers personally guided the respondents in answering the items

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary and conclusion of the study as well as the

recommendation based on the researchers findings.

Summary

The main purpose of this study was to determine the Perceptions of Senior High

School Students to the Harmful Effects of Being Dependent on Technology Devices in

Tipas National High School (Grade 7-12).It involves one-forty-three (143) senior high

school students from Tipas National High School (Grade 7-12) that serve as the

respondents in this study. The study uses descriptive research design to determine the

harmful effects of being dependent on technology device. The researcher use survey

questionnaire as the main tool in data gathering, and it uses stratified random sampling in

determining the number of respondent. The statistical tools used were percentage,

weighted mean and composite mean.

Specifically, this study helps to assess the profile of the respondents in terms of

age, sex, and grade and section and the effect of being dependent on technology devices

to students. Next are the ways to prevent harmful effect of being dependent on

technology devices in student lastly is technology makes addictive to students

Conclusions
The Impact of works and writings of Dr. Jose Rizal in our national identity
37

The study was conducted to determine the Perceptions of Senior High School

Students to the Harmful Effects of Being Dependent on Technology Devices in Tipas

National High School (Grade 7-12)

. From the results of the study, the researchers conclude that:

1. Majority of the respondents is eighteen (18) years old with the total number of

75 out of 143 students and the percentage is 52.45%

2. Most of the respondents were female with a total number of 97 out of 143

students.

3. Base on the result of the study most of the respondents are HUMSS students

4. Base on the effect of being dependent on technology devices as it has a

composite mean of 3.31 and the verbal interpretation is strongly agree

5. Base on the ways to prevent harmful effects of being dependent. It has a total

composite mean of 3.49 with the verbal interpretation strongly agree.

Limitation of the Study

The researchers encountered unexpected scenarios in the conduct of this study.

This includes conflict in making questionnaires as well as in doing consent form and

getting the approval of the principal. The researchers get difficulties in getting the

schedule of the respondents because many of them are busy in some important matters

and some of them didn’t participate well in answering the questionnaires. The researchers

also encountered conflict in tabulating the results of the questionnaire because some
The Impact of works and writings of Dr. Jose Rizal in our national identity
38

result do not match. The researchers conclude that there in mismatching because the other

group checks the tabulation.

The researchers addressed the conflict by accepting their mistakes and having

patience in everything they do. The researchers also use their determination to surpass the

difficulties they encounter in gathering and analyzing data.

Recommendation

The foregoing findings and conclusions paved way for the researchers to

recommend the following.

1. The school administration is recommended to have programs or activities that

not involve technology device like gardening and board games and may use technology

devices for educational purposes.

2. The teachers are recommended to have a place in their classroom wherein

there are information given about harmful effects of being dependent on technology

devices.

3. The teachers are also recommended to encourage the students to join

different club in school like reading and other activities that are not using technology

device to prevent harmful effects of being dependent.

4. Future researchers should conduct further research to improve the findings of

this study.
