General Introduction
Debtwire’s Restructuring Advisory Mandates Report tracks and ranks advisors by the total number
of representations announced during April, covering both in-court and out-of-court situations.
Debtwire sourced the advisory mandates highlighted in this report through proprietary reporting, as
well as public documents, including court filings.
The Restructuring Advisory Mandates Report breaks down mandates by the following categories:
• Lead Counsel;
• Local/Special Counsel;
• Financial Advisors/Investment Bankers;
• Restructuring Advisors; and
• Claims Agents.
The report also tracks retentions of multiple reorganization parties in interest, including:
• Companies/Debtors;
• Official Committees;
• Lenders/Bondholders (including ad hoc groups);
• Loan Agents/Indenture Trustees; and
• PE Sponsors.
This edition identifies a total of 343 advisory mandates related to 94 North American companies
exploring restructuring alternatives or currently engaged in Chapter 11 and Chapter 15 proceedings
(33 in-court, 61 out-of-court).

General Introduction
To further break down April’s results, the mandates reported herein reflect:
• 205 law firm hires;
• 104 FA/IB appointments;
• 17 restructuring advisor retentions; and
• 17 claims agent engagements.
This is one of the busiest advisory retention months we have recorded. The combined
advisor rankings treat representations of all parties-in-interest equally, whether the
representation is for the company itself or another related party (e.g., UCC, an ad hoc
group, etc).
In this edition, we have separately broken out the following types of representations in
the cumulative rankings tables, as well as in separate league tables based on
representation type: (1) the company; (2) committees (unsecured creditors and equity);
and (3) bonds/loans, which include loan agents and indenture trustees, ad hoc groups,
and significant individual lenders or bondholders.
We also provide general mandates information regarding the sector of the restructuring
companies.
The rankings data in this report provides the respective category leaders. The
accompanying Excel file includes all the retention data for 2020 year-to-date.

Frequently Appointed Advisors: Lead Counsel

LEAD COUNSEL. This category tracks the main restructuring/bankruptcy counsel retained by a party.
Kirkland & Ellis led this category with 15 mandates, the vast majority of which are in the Debtwire prime
market. Akin Gump follows with 11 hires, and then Paul Weiss with eight hires.
Kirkland & Ellis represented the most debtors (14) by a wide margin—Weil Gotshal came in second with six
debtor representations—while Akin Gump worked most on the creditor-side (9 hires). Stroock and Gibson
Dunn were the other leading creditor-side practices, while Pachulski represented the most UCCs. Paul Weiss
represented the most equity holders this month.

LOCAL/SPECIAL COUNSEL. This category tracks law firms retained as local counsel or special counsel (i.e., for a specific
purpose such as conflicts or taxes).
Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor held the top position with six engagements, mostly in the Debtwire prime market.
Three firms tied for second place with three mandates: Ashby & Geddes, Morris Nichols and Richards Layton &
Finger.
Young Conaway and Bradley Arant Boult Cummings represented the most companies (2), and Morris James obtained
the most UCC local counsel mandates among the leaders (1). In addition, Young Conaway also led the creditor-side local
law firm leaderboard, with four mandates, more than any other firms’ total for the month.

FINANCIAL ADVISORS (FA)/INVESTMENT BANKERS (IB). This category puts both FA and IB representations into one category to
show the combined mandates of the firms operating in the financial advisory space.
Houlihan Lokey held the top spot on the FA/IB leaderboard with 17 new hires, almost double as many as second place finisher,
Moelis & Co., which obtained nine new mandates. PJT Partners, FTI Consulting and Evercore had six mandates each. Moelis &
Co. and PJT Partners worked exclusively in the Debtwire prime market, while the other leading firms represented clients in a handful
of middle market restructurings.
Houlihan Lokey represented the most companies (6) and creditors (11) this month, while Moelis came in second for both, tied on
the creditor side with Perella Weinberg, Greenhill and Ducera Partners.

Stretto obtained the top position with five new engagements, followed by Kurtzman Carson Consultants with four new
mandates.
Prime Clerk heavily exclusively in the Debtwire prime market, leading representations in that market, while Stretto,
KCC and Donlin Recano had the most middle market hires. while Stretto, KCC and Donlin Recano put more efforts on

based on the sector of the restructuring company, and YTD firm rankings based on the
party represented, including:
• Company-side mandates;
• Committee representations, including both UCC and equity committees; and
• Financial creditor hires, including loan agents, indentures trustees, ad hoc groups, and
significant bondholders and lenders.
We have provided separate league tables for Lead Counsel, Local/Special Counsel and
Financial Advisor/I-Banker, based on whether the representation was: (1) on the company
side; (2) for a committee; or (3) for a financial creditor. We present the YTD rankings
under the role the advisor played (i.e., lead counsel), not the party represented (i.e.,
committee).
For April 2020, 168 of the 343 mandates were on the company side, while the Oil & Gas
sector was responsible for 81 new mandates in 27 cases, followed by the Telecom sector
with 39 mandates in five cases.
