Unit Lesson Plan
Standards that bridge the entire unit
Grade 4: Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a
statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal
statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.

Unit BIG Idea (stated in student-friendly terms; explain why/connections to life)

Students will understand and interpret multiplication in other settings of their life.

Lesson 1 – Topic: Teaching multiplication using manipulatives.

Objectives: Students will be able to solve multiplication problems using their manipulatives with 80%
accuracy.

Assessment plans / check for understanding: The teachers will check for understanding by having the
students show their manipulatives on Zoom and how they solved the equations.

Introduction/Anticipatory set (why)/hook: Today, we will be learning about multiplying using

different types of manipulatives. We will be using virtual base ten blocks in order to solve
multiplication problems.

Instructional content/strategies: The students will be one-on-one with the teachers in breakout
Zoom rooms and will use their manipulatives to show their work to the teachers.
Teach/Model: The teachers will teach the students how to solve the multiplication problems below
using the virtual base ten blocks.
59*3
85*4
90*3
55*55

Guided practice: The teachers and the students will solve the multiplication problems below
together.
12*3
35*7
37*9
900*2
111*66

Independent practice: The students will solve the multiplication problems independently and the
teachers can help the students if they are struggling.
12*4
92*2
34*2
234*7

Closure: The teachers will ask the students if they have any unanswered questions from the lesson.
Tomorrow, we will be solving multiplication word problems.

Co-teaching Strategies (specified above or here):

Parallel teaching
Differentiation (specified above or here): If the students are struggling to solve the multiplication
problems, the students can work together to answer the questions. If the multiplication problems are
not challenging enough, the teachers can give the students more challenging multiplication problems.

Lesson 2 – Topic: Multiplication Word Problems

Objectives: Students will be able to solve and create comparative multiplication word problems with
80% accuracy.

Assessment plans / check for understanding: The students will complete their guided practice
problems and independent practice problems to check their understanding.

Introduction/Anticipatory set (why)/hook: Today, we will be learning how to solve multiplication

word problems. You will even have the opportunity to create your own.

Instructional content/strategies: Whole-group instruction and work together in partners.

Teach/Model:
Tom ran 4 laps of the soccer field. Sam ran 5 times as many laps of the soccer field. How many laps
did Sam run?

There are 20 soccer balls in a PE storage room. There are 4 times as many soccer balls as tennis balls.
How many tennis balls are there?

Guided practice
This month Jane saved 6 times as much money for arts and crafts as she did last month. If she saved
$42 dollars for arts and crafts this month, how much did she save last month?

Johnathan lifted 50lbs weights. Ben lifted 500lbs weights. How many times heavier was the weight
that Ben lifted compared to the weight that Johnathan lifted?

Independent practice

The students will work together. Have one student share their screen and both students will
collaborate on how to solve the problem.

● Have the students create their own word problems.

● Dad picked 5 kg of apples. Aunt Sue picked 4 times as many apples as Dad. How many more
kilograms of apples did Aunt Sue pick than Dad?
● A bag of pipe cleaners is on sale for $15. A pack of glue-sticks costs four times as much. A pack
of popsicle sticks is half as much as the shoes. If Mark buys one bag of pipe cleaners, two
packs of glue sticks, and one pack of popsicle sticks, how much will he spend?
● Zoe counts 4 times as many black buttons as white buttons for sale at the craft store. She
counts a total of 25 buttons. How many more black buttons does Zoe count than white
buttons?

Work independently
● A single soccer ball costs $3. A bag of soccer balls costs $12. How many times more does the
bag of soccer balls cost than the single soccer ball?
● Jack ran 5 times as long this week as he did last week. If he ran for 110 minutes this week,
how long did he run for last week?
● Ms. Lio has 20 buttons. Mr. Smith has twice as many buttons as Ms. Lio. He borrows all of Ms.
Lio’s buttons for an arts and crafts project. Each student needs 3 buttons. How many students
will be able to create an arts and crafts project?
● A family size pizza is $24 and costs 3 times as much as a small pizza. Peter buys two family size
pizzas and 3 small pizzas. How much does he spend in all?

Closure: Have the students show the teachers and another student their word problems. The
teachers will go over how to solve multiplication word problems.

Co-teaching Strategies (specified above or here): Team teaching- The teachers will teach the
students together the material content.
Differentiation (specified above or here): Give the students easier problems to complete if they are
struggling. Give the students harder problems if they are not being challenged enough.

Lesson 3 – Topic: Jeopardy

Objectives: Students will be able to solve the questions correctly with 90% accuracy.

Assessment plans / check for understanding: The teachers will use Jeopardy to check the students’
multiplication answers.

Introduction/Anticipatory set (why)/hook: Today, we are going to play Jeopardy! You will be working
independently on multiplication problems and will tell the teachers your answers when you are done
with each problem.

Instructional content/strategies: Review the rules of Jeopardy and how we will be using Jeopardy
through Zoom.

Teach/Model: The teachers will teach the students how to play Jeopardy through Zoom.

Guided practice: The teachers will teach the students how to solve multiplication problems that they
are struggling with when they are playing both Jeopardy Review Games.

Independent practice: The students will be playing Jeopardy and will answer word problems and
multiplication problems independently.

Closure: The teachers will ask the students if they have any questions from the Jeopardy Review
Game and answer any questions that the students have.
Co-teaching Strategies (specified above or here): One teach one assist. One teacher is in charge of
controlling Jeopardy and the other teacher is in charge of checking the students’ answers against the
Jeopardy game answers.

Differentiation (specified above or here): If the students are struggling while playing Jeopardy, the
teachers could guide the students in finding the answer. The teachers could also not allow the
students to answer the column of questions that are too challenging for the students. If the Jeopardy
Review Game is not challenging enough, the teachers will use another Jeopardy Review Game for the
students.
