Part 2: Communication Problem Solving • “I” Statements Paragraph
Read the following scenario and write a paragraph response illustrating how you would handle the
situation using "I" Statements. What would you actually say to the person? Also, offer a suggestion/
solution so that they know how to correct how they affected you or how make things better for everyone.

Scenario One: Your friend comes over and is unusually quiet. You ask your friend, “Is there something
wrong?” and s/he says, “Nothing!”

Scenario Two: You are trying to teach an aunt how to use your digital camera that she needs to borrow.
She is silent, but you can tell by the frowns and puzzled looks that she is having difficulty with all the
features you are explaining.

Scenario Three: You have been waiting for a friend at the mall and are upset because s/he is over an
hour late. When you call your friend’s cell phone, your friend is also upset because s/he is waiting for you
at a coffee shop.

Scenario Four: You are working on a group project with four classmates and are having problems
dividing the tasks. Both you and another student in the group want to handle the Power Point
presentation component, but there is only one computer for you to use.
