1. What is a ballad? A ballad is a poem that is intended to be sung and contains some specific characteristics, such as
incremental repetition, sordid or tragic subject matter, or a refrain.
2. What is an analogy? An analogy is an extended comparison of relationships based on the idea that the relationship
between one pair of things is like the relationship of another pair.
3. What is metonymy? Metonymy is a figure of speech in which a thing or concept is referred to by the name of
something closely associated with that thing or concept.
4. Why is Henry VIII central to the history of Protestantism? Which of his actions brought about religious change in Tudor
England? Did he achieve his goals?
5. How does Catherine of Aragon fit into the history of the Tudor Dynasty? What is her significance to British and world
history? Who is Anne Boleyn?
6. Who is Mary I of England? What nickname is she known by? How did she receive this nickname? Did she succeed in
her plans or campaigns for England?
7. How is the reign of Elizabeth I seen by most scholars? Did England flourish during her reign? Who followed her on the
throne of England?
8. In whose reign was William Shakespeare born? In whose reign did he die? Did the British ruler influence his work? If
so, how? If not, why?
9. What are some of the notable characteristics of the Globe Theatre? Where in London was it located? How was it
constructed? Which entertainments did it compete with? Which hours was it open? What were its most valuable
possessions? Why might certain reformers dislike theaters?
10. What are the principle characteristics of the sonnet? What forms can it take? What are the differences between these
forms? How are their structures and rhyme schemes different?
11. What is the meter of a poem? Which type of meter is normally seen in sonnets? Why?
