SIKA SCREEDS DUBAÏ 2019

WHAT IS A SCREED ?

A screed is a mortar laid on the floor with a thickness between 3 and 10 cm

To :

 Level the floor

 Coat different ducts/tubes (electricity, heating tubes…)
 be a support for final coating (tiles, parquet floor, lino, carpet…)

2
Sika Viscochape Concept

SELF LEVELING TECHNOLOGY

A screed is a mortar laid on the floor with a thickness of 3 to 10 cm

It aims to :
 Level the floor
 Encapsulate underfloor heating Systems
 Be the support for final floor covering (tiles, wooden floor, carpet, etc)

A screed can be Traditional or Self leveling

target flow is 230 to 260mm

SIKA VISCOCHAPE ADVANTAGES
• 10 times faster than traditional solution : 1000m² a day
• Short the building time
• Increase productivity
• Large floor area without joints (up to 80m²)

• Reduce the noise on construction site (urban area)

• Less labour intensive : installation & production time ; health and safety risks

• Compatible with all floor coverings and adhesives (cement based)

• Can be foot trafficked after 24 hours

On heating floors
• No damaging of the pipes during the casting.
• Encapsulation of the heating pipes : no air voids = efficiency
• Substantially improves the performance of the under floor heating
TYPE OF SCREED APPLICATION
When the screed is laid directlty on the support, this is a
BONDED SCREED

When the screed is applied on a damp proof membrane, this is

an UNBONDED SCREED

When the screed is laid on insulation (especially with

underfloor heating systems), this is a FLOATING SCREED

5
WHY A SELF LEVELLING SCREED ?
Advantages for

RMC :
 Traditional concrete price is very low due to price war, RMC has difficulties to earn money
with is it
 Self Levelling Screeds is used by RMC to
1/ Differentiate
2/ Earn more money because it brings more comfort to appliers
3/ Develop loyalty of appliers

Appliers :
 Most of them have lots of jobsites in progress and have no time to do all (lack of
workforce, too much time per job site with dry system)
 Yield when applying a screed for a 100 m² jobsite (5 m3):
 Dry Screed : 2 people = 6 – 8 hours
 Self Leveling Screed : 2-3 people team = 1- 2 hours

MATERIALS SELECTION GUIDE CEMENT
Cement could be :

CEM I 52,5 or 42,5 (N ou R)

CEM II/A or CEM II/B 42,5 or 52,5 (N or R)

Don’t use CEM III or CEM V

 Setting time is quite long (as the screed must be retarded for 3 hours of
workability)
 Risk of cracking is bigger (Cure has to be reinforced)

Good knowledge of cement allows to choose the best superplasticizer

(%Na2Oeq)

20
MATERIALS SELECTION GUIDE ADDITION
Additions could be :

Calcareous filler (type A or B)

Siliceous filler (if granulometry is OK)

Don’t use other type of additions (slag / fly ash or metakaolin) because:
 Air entrainment is not regular with fly ash
 Too much strength because of pozzonalic effect
 Risk of cracking increases

21
MATERIALS SELECTION GUIDE SAND
Sand granulometry should be between 0/2 to 0/4 mm

Important parameters :

• Sand cleanness
• Absorption
• Density (mix design / m3)
• Amount of fines (take the minimum value to formulate)
• Fine modulus (allow to determine the amount of paste)
• Compactness

22
MIX DESIGN

ADVANTAGES SELF-LEVELLING VS. TRADITIONAL SCREEDS
 Faster placements
 Less problems (from production to application)
 Homogeneous mix
 Pumpability and flowability
 Better adhesion (i.e. flooring heating system)
 Controlled quality
 Excellent compressive and flexural strength

Traditional screed Self levelling screed

BENEFITS OF SELF-LEVELLING SCREEDS

Reducing Harsh working conditions

WHY this business
is important for
RMC

27
SELF-LEVELLING SCREED
Self-levelling screed can be produced by different ways :

28
WHY A SELF LEVELLING SCREED ?
 In 90’s, only dry screed systems were available in the Europeen market

 Regulation was only existing for dry system :

Referring to French law, only dry screed system are allowed

2020 Nederlands regulation want to ban the dry screed

 Disadvantages of dry system :

 Application time (placing, levelling,…) is too long
 Doing a jobsite requires more labour force
 Application is hard (working conditions are painful)
 Performance may not be enough (heating floor,…)
WHY A SELF LEVELLING SCREED ?
Lack of labour force in France :
 Workforce avoid working in construction markets (bad image, hard working
conditions,…) so the lack of labour force is very high in construction market
 Workforce cost is expensive

Technology progress
New admixture technology allowed new concrete properties (self levelling, better
life slump…)
Used to create Self Levelling Screeds :
 Offering them comfort, easiness and speed, better working conditions, people
are in a better shape after 40 years working in jobsites
 More speed, less workforce for jobsite needed

French regulation authorised new screed system through technical agreement

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE NEW SCREED CONCEPT
Here are listed our technical specifications for the development of a new self-levelling screed concept :

- Self levelling (slump between 22 and 28 cm on

hagerman cone)
- Low viscosity (Marsh cone < 8s) / Easy to pump
- Slump keeping during 3h00 for transportation on the
job site

- Setting time that allows to walk on the screed the day

after casting (> 1 Mpa at 1 day)
- Compressive strength > 20 Mpa and flexural strength >
4 Mpa at 28 days (EN 13813)

- Drying shrinkage < 300 µm/m (at 20°C and 50%HR)

- No cracks
- Time of drying similar to a cement-based screed (tiles
after 14 days)

100 sqm without heating floors)

Need 2 :
• Working without curing agent

Need 3 :
• Working without sanding surface skin

NEW SIKA VISCOCHAPE CONCEPT

SIKA EASYGRIP
Improves surface aspect at hardened state
Allows to work without curing agent (when screed is layed into a new building)

Without Viscofinish
Surface skin formation
« smooth surface »

Air tightness due to new thermal standard in France

With Viscofinish (RT2012)
No laitance
« rough surface »
Less cure

 Drying shrinkage increases with the paste volume

 Drying shrinkage increases with the W/C ratio
 Problematic of drying shrinkage is very important for self-levelling screed because
this kind of material has both high paste volume and W/C ratio
