BL INSIGHT PIECE 10

ON iNNER CONDITION AND THAT THING CALLED MRR

Inner Condition
In the session yesterday, the achievements of the speakers are obviously impressive, what
impressed me most was their inner condition. I was very keen on observing their inner condition
more than anything else because Prof. Ting quoted before, as the reading on “Ownership” also
mentioned, that “[t]he success of an intervention is dependent on the inner condition of the
intervener”. So I wanted to see how the movement of their spirit brought about the success of
their initiatives.

The thing about inner condition is that it is not visible to the naked eye. There are two things
yesterday that revealed their inner condition, which are very subtle. Prof. Tim pointed out
“language”, and Prof. Nieves highlighted the importance of their “personal stories” because
leadership is personal. I think the language one uses reveals what is in the heart, and the way
they tell and frame their stories reveal their inner condition. I am convinced that their results
are largely produced by their inner condition. I think that a good inner condition is not like a
diploma that one will have forever once a person has earned it, it is constantly evolving as we go
through our respective journeys, so I am interested to observe further how their journeys will
unfold as they carry on with life.

MRR
In our Strategic Management class, each LT gets to present a case study. Most of the case
studies presented were MRRs by students. The MRRs of my batch mates are so impressive. The
amount of data and analysis that they showcased is enormously intimidating to the point that I
felt bad having to present my social enterprise (SE) as my MRR topic because my SE is still in its
nascent stage of development.

What I find inspiring, however, is Jaton’s view of MRRs. I was moved to shift my perspective into
looking at my MRR as simply a step forward towards the desired outcome that I envision for my
community and my SE. At the end of the day, we all have different learning and leadership
journeys, I have to honor my own journey and where my SE is right now. It is what it is. What I
want to focus on is the process from which I want to approach the realization of new ideas. I am
not sure what will emerge, and that is what excites me. I love how I was able to overcome that
voice of cynicism and fear.
