Test Authorized By L.Moller

1. Preface
This test method is used to evaluate the appearance of a garment sample and the durability of
embellishments or trims attached to the garment after laundering.
The test involves multiple wash/drying cycles of garments or mocked up samples to simulate the wear
and tear that occurs during laundering.

2. Scope
a) The test method should be conducted in the garment form and the embellishments/trims must be
attached using the same application method used in bulk production.

b) During the product development stage, mocked up samples/panels can be tested to evaluate
alternative attachment methods.

c) This test method should be used in conjunction with the fabric testing requirements outlined in the
TQM-TEX-01- Apparel Textile Specification Manual. All fabrics must meet Target minimum
requirements outlined in the TQM-TEX-01 prior to garment production commencement.

d) This test method shall not be used in place or instead of the Target TP12- Print Check wash test or
the Target TP14 – Corsetry /Co-ordinates wash test.

3. Definitions
Embellishments/Trims are items such as but not limited to:

Appliques Ribbons Nail Heads

Badges Laces Heat Sealed Appliques
Buttons Beads Transfer Print Labelling
Bows Diamantes Studs
Embroideries Tassels Sewing Thread
Cords Cord Ends Tapes
Eyelets Pompoms Glitter
Raw Edge Trims Jewells Zippers

5. Reagents
- Domestic low lather non-phosphate washing powder suitable for front loading automatic
washing machine. A propriety product available in Australia is: OMO (NP)

6. Safety Warning / Procedures

The following Safety Warning is a guide. Consult the relevant Material Safety Data Sheet and
manufacturer's recommendations before using chemicals and equipment. Ensure Occupation
Health and Safety Guidelines are adhered to. Domestic grade washing powder is not known to
exert any harmful effects on health when used in accordance with normal practice. It is
recommended that eye contact is avoided, as should prolonged contact with the skin.

7. Apparatus
7.1 Front Loading (Horizontal Drum Type) Washing Machine as per ISO 6330 Method A
7.2 Makeweights: BS EN 6330:2000 100% Polyester Type 111
7.3 Tumble Dryer
7.4 Cabinet Dryer
7.5 Non-rusting mesh drying trays
7.6 Balances/Scales –capable of weighing up to 3kg in 25g graduations.
7.7 Digital thermometer or thermocouple
6.8 Timer
6.9 Viewing cabinet equipped with artificial daylight D65 light source

8. Test Specimen
It is recommended that a minimum of two samples of each style be submitted for testing.
An original sample should be retained for comparison after wash.
For Garments
The tested garment must not be cut or damaged in anyway prior to testing. Any identification
markings should be made using inedible marking pen.
The garment must be washed face side outwards with all fastenings open/undone unless the
recommended care instructions states otherwise.

9. Procedures
9.1 Washing Procedure

9.1.1 Place garment sample and any required makeweights into the machine.
Total load with the test sample(s) should be 2.0 kg.
9.1.2 Based upon the Target recommended care instruction select the appropriate washing
program and temperature as per ISO 6330-2012- TypeA- Front Loading Machine Table B.1

Care Instruction Wash Agitation Procedure No. of

Temp No. Cycles
Cold Hand 40°C Gentle 4G 1
Cold Delicate 40°C Mild 4M 5
Cold Machine 40°C Normal 4N 5
Warm Hand 50°C Gentle 4H 1
Warm Delicate 50°C Mild 5M 5
Warm Machine 50°C Normal 5N 5

9.1.3 Add 20g of washing powder per load.

9.1.4 Garments/Mocked up samples with a ‘Hand’ wash care instruction require one (1) cycle.
Garments/ Mocked up samples with either a “Delicate” or “Machine” wash care
instruction require five (5) wash cycles with no drying between cycles

9.2 Drying Procedure

Line Dry
Remove the specimen from the washing machine and hang unfolded with the fabric
length in the vertical direction to avoid distortion. Suspend the test specimen from the
line until dry
Tumble Dry
Remove the test samples plus makeweights and Tumble Dry the whole 2.0kg load for
60mins. One (1) x Cycle.
Unless stated otherwise use normal setting.

10.0 Ironing or Pressing

After examination and reporting it may be necessary to iron and press the test specimen for
further evaluation. Such ironed or pressed specimens must be clearly identified as such in order
not to subsequently mislead.

11. Assessment

Report the wash procedure and drying method used.

Examine the washed samples and compare against the original unwashed sample
Comment on any changes in appearance after washing with regards to change of shade,
cross-staining, change of accessories, change of handle, seam breakdown or puckering due to
differential shrinkage.
Report and comment on findings as per the following Table 1.

Overall Comment:
- For final approval of washed sample appearance, reference should be made to the
Target Quality Assurance team member - Fabric Technologist or Garment Technician
