    Rizal published his second novel, El Filibusterismo, in 1891 while living in Ghent, Belgium. The manuscript was almost burned but was saved. El Filibusterismo differs from Rizal's first novel, Noli Me Tangere, in that it is darker in tone and depicts the worsening conditions in the Philippines under Spanish rule. Rizal returned to the Philippines in 1892 and founded the Liga Filipina, a civic organization intended to promote reforms. However, the group was seen as subversive and Rizal was deported to Dapitan, where he spent his exile productively working on agriculture and education projects to improve the town.
