Transmission Identification
The 6T40 is standard equipment in the following: Chevrolet Equinox (MH7, MHC), GMC Torrent (MH7, MHC), Buick
LaCrosse (MH7), and Chevrolet Malibu (MH8)

6T40/45 differences
The primary difference between two variations of the six-speed automatic transaxle being the
6T45 has greater torque handling capability. The output chain is 1.25-in wide in 6T45, versus
1-in wide for the 6T40. The input gearset of the 6T45 uses five pinion gears, versus four
pinions for the 6T40. In addition, the case of the 6T45 is slightly larger and includes a heavier
ribbed case for strength.
There a few parts that are interchangeable and always use caution when matching parts up.
There are different tooth counts on sun gears and drive and driven sprockets listed in parts
catalogs. As always put back in what ever came out.
These units along with all the other front wheel drive 6 speed transmissions Ford or GM all
work exactly the same. The clutch apply chart applies to GM and Ford 6 speed FWD models.
As we will see the major difference in design between GM and Ford is that the computer is
internal on a GM and external on a Ford.
The side cover has a molded O-ring type seal. The replacement comes in the kit.
Be sure to slide the latch on the MLP connector to the left before removing the connector.

A word about checking the fluid level
More than ever checking the fluid correctly is so critical. Its not like it used to be where you could pull the
stick, wipe it off and push it down the tube and pull it and check the level and get a good sense of the
level and condition.
Todays fluid require that the level be checked at a specific temperature. If the fluid is not at the specified
temperature then the fluid level will be incorrect and a misdiagnosis will follow.
Here is the procedure for checking a 2012 Chevy Malibu 2.4 L:
TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL AND CONDITION CHECK
Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check
This procedure checks both the transmission fluid level, as well as the condition of the
fluid itself.
Caution:
Use Dexron VI transmission fluid only. Failure to use the proper fluid may result in
transmission internal damage.
Note:
Ensure the transmission has enough fluid in it to safely start the vehicle without
damaging the transmission. With the vehicle off and the transmission fluid
temperature at approximately 20-25°C (68-77°F) there must be at least enough fluid
to drain out of the fluid level hole. This will ensure that there is enough fluid in the
sump to fill the components once the vehicle is started.
Fluid Level (continued)
Non Dipstick Level Checking Procedure
1. Start the engine.
2. Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever through each gear range,
pausing for about 3 seconds in each range. Then move the shift lever back to
PARK (P).
3. Allow the engine to idle 500-800 rpm for at least 3 minutes to allow any fluid
foaming to dissipate and the fluid level to stabilize. Release the brake pedal.
Note:
If the TFT reading is not at the required temperature, allow the vehicle to cool, or
operate the vehicle until the appropriate TFT is reached. If the fluid temperature is
below the specified range, perform the following procedure to raise the fluid
temperature to the specification. Drive the vehicle in second gear until the fluid temperature is at the
specified temperature.
4. Keep the engine running and observe the transmission fluid temperature (TFT)
using the Driver Information Center or a scan tool.
Caution: The transmission fluid level must be checked when the transmission fluid temperature (TFT) is
at 85-95°C (185-203°F). If the TFT is not at this temperature, operate the
vehicle or allow the fluid to cool as required. Setting the fluid level with a TFT outside this temperature
will result in either an under or over-filled transmission. TFT 95°C under-filled, TFT 85°C over-filled .An
under-filled transmission will cause premature component wear or damage. An overfilled transmission
will cause fluid to discharge out the vent tube, fluid foaming, or pump cavitation.
Fluid Level (continued)
5. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. The vehicle must be level, with the engine running
and the shift lever in the PARK range.
6. While the vehicle is idling, remove the oil level set plug. Allow any fluid to drain.
• If the fluid is flowing as a steady stream, wait until the fluid begins to drip.
• If no fluid comes out, add fluid until fluid drips out.

Oil Level Set Plug

Fluid Level (continued)
7. Inspect the fluid color. The fluid should be red or dark brown.
• If the fluid color is very dark
or black and has a burnt odor, inspect the fluid for excessive metal particles or other debris.
A small amount of"friction" material is a "normal" condition. If large pieces and/or metal
particles are noted in the fluid, flush the oil cooler and cooler lines and overhaul the
transmission. If there are no signs of transmission internal damage noted, replace the fluid,
repair the oil cooler, and flush the cooler lines.
• Fluid that is cloudy or milky or appears to be contaminated with water
indicates engine coolant or water contamination.
8. Inspect for external leaks.
9. If the fluid was changed, reset the transmission oil life monitor if applicable.

Stator Bushing Inspection
The stator bushing wear is very
critical because there are no
sealing rings on the shaft. If this
bushing is worn TCC slip codes
may set.
To test the bushing for wear use a
small piece of cellophane tape on
the input shaft. Place the stator on
the shaft. If the stator goes over the
shaft with tape on it the bushing is
worn out and must be replaced.

These units have solid sealing rings on the Input drum

rings depending on your budget.
The factory can be bought on ebay for about 120.00

The alternative is to use a small engine ring compressor
tool for 14.00 from the local parts store.
