GARY GYGAX Q&A PART XIV

Rary was played by Brian Blume (the VP of Old-TSR and the money behind the venture). His
character was later added to the council by way of literary contrivance and has nothing
whatsoever to do with the original events/PC as Brian played in our campaign. [RJK]

Greyhawk had specialty priests. The Elder Priests (for the Cthulhu gods) I designed; EGG
worked on those for the pantheons, and we had Pholtus early on, with extra blinding light
spells and their particular trappings. Again, as many, many facets of the game were advancing
all at once, each component received "boosts" when we thought of these, but there was little
time at that point to get too specialized with parts, as this was a broad approach and very time
consuming. That is why you find some very good PC classes considered and designed (like Joe
Fischer's Ranger) done outside Gary's purview and later added and amended by him to fit
with AD&D. It's nice now to have all of the basics and advanced stuff at hand to decide upon
what one will specify and expand upon; back then, considering the time to write, play test,
market, grow, write articles, move (TSR moved 4 times in LG), pack, ship, convention, etc, etc,
we barely had enough time to sleep. I have noted this outgrowth of the game before. This was
an ongoing evolution which now years later is seeing many fruitful things spawning from it.
My hope is to see products which portray this type of newness and creative content all the
time. Considering what we had to work with (no internet, less folks, less codified sources,
etc.) I would expect that more and better material, thought out and by design aimed at upping
the ante, would be flowing from various authors, now. Take for instance Razor's prestige class
in the D20 forums here. Really well thought out and interesting. More stuff like that is needed
(sorry, a little OT). : ) [RJK] http://piedpiperpublishing.yuku.com/topic/2111

[Did any of you guys ever really mean for your characters to be used in any fashion outside the
original games run by EGG and RK?]

In answering for myself. NO. Never thought that the PCs would end up published, re-trodden
over and as IP in lawsuits. Ah, but Robilar should have an out, as his name first occurs in the
Gnome Cache, not part of TSR's property, methinks, though I should ask EGG about that. As
for any Rogues Gallery commentary, I hadn't heard of that scenario until several months ago,
so I don't know if Ernie and Gary held back pertinent stats, etc. [RJK]

[On Robilar in the City of Brass, coming back from China]

Tis true, as that did job a memory. I believe we stopped there briefly and picked up flying
carpets for all.

I best remember the Roc/Gem encounter, however, which was quite a puzzler. [RJK]

[What could be found in the chamber of the nine?]

As for the chamber, it was a plain affair with the pedestals mounting the inanimate forms of
the Nine, that is all I recall from playing the encounter and being privy to the map and notes.
