Title : Laughter; It Is Good For You

By : Wan Izzat Fahmi Bin Wan Ibrahim

Ha..Ha..Ha..Ha.. Laughter! Laughter is the best medicine. Have you heard of this
saying? I am really sure everyone has. And, yes, it might sound too cliché, but laughter
really is the best medicine. That is what I am going to talk about here. .. Good morning I
bid to honourable judges, respectful time keeper, teachers and beloved friends. My topic
for today is “Laughter; it is good for you.” Yes! Did you know that there many benefits just
from one simple laughter?

Ladies and gentlemen,

What is “LAUGHTER?”Well, according to the dictionary, laughter is "the sounds and

movements that our bodies make when we find something funny". To make it simple,
laughter is when we feel happy. Do you laugh when you feel sad? No right? Some people
laugh loudly. Some people laugh quietly and may even cover their mouths with their hands.
We may laugh in different ways but one thing is the same – laughing is contagious.

Beloved audience,

According to a research, we laugh about 17 times a day. So, that means we really like
laughing! If someone tells you a sad story, do you laugh at him? Absolutely no, because it
would be very rude! There are many things that can make us laugh. When we listen to
jokes, we laugh. And of course, only when the jokes are funny. But, when our friends laugh,
we will laugh to join in. Am I right? So, what makes laughter is so good for us?

If you want to be healthy, you have to enjoy laughing. Yes, it is true. Laughter makes us
happier. It enhances our mood and creativity. When we laugh, our bodies produce
“endorphins”, which are “happiness hormones.” It is also a natural stress medicine. It
combats bad hormones that cause stress and discomfort. Self-esteem is important.
Laughter creates positive thoughts that can boost our self-esteem. If I have a low self-
esteem, do you think I am able to stand here in front of you? When we laugh, we burn
calories too! A study found that laughing for 10 to 15 minutes a day can burn about 40
calories. It can also help our immune system work to better. So what does it mean? We can
fight diseases better. Wow! Unbelievable, isn’t it?

Members of the floor,

Many of us think that laughter is good for health, merely. However, it is beyond that.
Not only for health, but social too! Laughter is the glue to keep our relationships together.
Dr Robert Provine said, “laughter is not primarily about humour, but about social
relationships.” As a saying goes, ”laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”
Why? This is because, when we hear laughter, naturally, we move toward it. And, we start
laughing! Yes! Laughter is a magnet. Laughter lowers our anxiety. It strengthens family
bonding too. Mutual laughter sessions bring family together. Plus, it makes it easier to
develop new friendship. Do you believe when I say this? Those who laugh and have a sense
of humour have more friends in their lives. Well, everyone loves funny people, don’t you
agree with me?

Hence, laughter does not only provide us with good times, but also brings positive
effects in our life. So, stop worrying and start laughing more! Trust me, laughter makes
you look younger. But, remember this, “laughter is the best medicine, but if you laugh
without reason, you need medicine.” That’s all from me. Thank you for listening.
