Introduction:
On Tuesday 18th July ,2020, between the hours of nine in the morning and two in the afternoon, dozens of
residents from my community, Richmond, Fairville, engaged in a protest against the increasing crime level
in the area.
Firstly, the residents gathered at the Port of Spain community centre located on Blackman Street,
Port of Spain. They sang gospel songs while they waited for the community leader, Mr. Wallaby to address
the crowd. Mr. Wallaby first thanked the demonstrators for participating and taking a stand toward
reducing crime. He added that the gun violence and robberies in the community were spiralling out of
control and mentioned the recent victim, fourteen-year-old, Amy Tate who was shot and killed in the
streets. Next, he encouraged participants to ensure that the march was peaceful and noted that violent
protestors will be arrested by the police.
Following this, the march commenced along the streets of the neighbourhood and then towards
the community police station where demonstrators protested for approximately three hours before
dispersing. Protestors marched with signs in their hands, sang songs and chanted slogans such as no more
crime, stop the violence and keep the peace. Police were present and armed at the event and stood on the
outskirts observing the marchers. There were no confrontations between demonstrators and the police. At
the police station, Mr. Wallaby spoke to the crowd once again, this time requesting that the government do
more to assist in reducing crime in the area and suggested some solutions such as regular police presence
in the area and providing more jobs and recreational activities for the youths.
At the police station, members of the media were present and interviewed Mr. Wallaby and the
other marchers. The crowds dispersed at approximately two o’clock in the afternoon. On the seven o’clock
news, later that day, an address was made by the Minister of National Security, Mr. Larry Mooney about
the event. He stated that the community’s concerns would be addressed and more will done to reduce the
crime rate.
