OCD

What can cause ocd in a person. Repeating things in a daily life strikes fear into not doing

them, thinking that something “may” happen to family members or someone close? There are

many ocd symptoms, washing hands many times, cleaning, etc. The one of the lesser-known

groups of symptoms includes ritualized touching, tapping, and movement. At first OCD wasn’t

described yet until 1838 and by the end of the 19th century it was regarded as a type of

depression. Then it all began to change, instead of a depression OCD was starting to be seen as a

psychoanalysis explanation.

Each article talks about what OCD is and who can have it. Which stated anyone can have

it. “ OCD affected 1.2% of adults in the U.S. in the past year” (Adaa.org). Most of the articles

talk about treatment, either how to get treatment or simply stating that they don’t give out

treatment. “Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) affects millions of people from all walks of

life” ( adda.org) “ Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common, chronic, anxiety

condition that can have disabling effects on both genders throughout the patient's lifespan. OCD

can manifest with a wide range of clinical pictures” ( ncbi.gov)

“OCD is typically treated with medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two”

(nimh.gov) and most of the other articles say the same thing on how to treat the issue on OCD.

However betterhealth.gov held more information. Instead of medication and etc. it says “ anxiety

management techniques, support groups and education” ( betterhealth.gov) What this tells the

viewer with OCD is that there are other options to get treatment, some just being in a support

group. Ncbi.gov also mentions support groups as well.

Some misconceptions on OCD are “ OCD is not a personality quirk or a character trait —

it is a very real mental health condition that affects about 2 to 3 million adults, and half a million

youth, in the US alone” (iocdf.org). That not everyone has it. That just cleaning isn’t the only

OCD. Fear of germs or contamination, Unwanted forbidden or taboo thoughts involving sex,

religion, or harm, Aggressive thoughts towards others self and or having things symmetrical or in

a perfect order. The causes of OCD may not be fully understood yet but there are some theories

on what causes this disorder. Are learned behavior which causes them to become receptive in

daily life. Example would be knocking on wood because that would have bad thoughts go away

and then repeating it throughout life being terrified if not done.
