Battery Care Procedure for Renewable Energy Applications

Renewable Energy applications that depend on battery power as part of the

system operation must be at maximum performance at all times. To ensure
this high rate of performance is achieved, the battery must be fully charged
prior to being installed in a Renewable Energy system.

Storage

Cells should be stored indoors in a clean, level, dry, cool location.

Recommended storage temperature is 0°F to 90°F (–18°C to 32°C).

BOOST CHARGING: 8G4DLTP - NIGERIA

Prior to installation the batteries must be given a boost charge; the recommended
charge is 24 hours at a constant voltage equal to 14.40V per 12V battery. This equates
to 28.8V in 24V systems and 57.6V in 48V systems.

Upon completion of charging, batteries should be installed in Renewable Energy

system within two weeks.

CHARGER VOLTAGE SETTINGS: Programmable are the best, but if not then set the
selectable settings to the closest level that match these.

Charging Stage System Voltage Charging Voltage

Absorption 12v 14.1V
 Absorption Time = 3 hrs 24v 28.2V
  48v 56.4V
Float 12v 13.5V
  24v 27.0V
  48v 54.0v
CRITICAL BATTERY CARE REQUIREMENTS:

Heat - Be certain your charger has a battery temperature sensor and that it
works to adjust charging voltages based on ambient heat levels. Without a
temperature sensor, your battery will not be properly charged.

Discharge - DOD (Depth of Discharge) is how much energy you take from the
battery. This should not surpass 50%, or 12.2V per cell. Continuously running
a battery below 12.2v will greatly decrease its lifespan. For 24v systems this is
24.4v, and for 48v systems this is 48.8v

Charger - Use an inverter with a minimum charger size of 40 amps. You

should have 20% of your battery bank size available in continuous charging
amps. For example, an 800ah battery bank should have a 160 amp charger.

Cable Size – Uses 70mm cables at a minimum, but preferably 90mm. Use
good connectors and ensure they are tight to prevent fires.
