A. Course Description and Goals

Coaching refers to an interactive partnership that engages the individual being coached
in a creative and thought-expanding process leading to greater self-awareness and
enhanced capacity to develop strategies, solve problems and implement solutions
(Goldvarg & Goldvarg, 2014; Zenger & Stinnett, 2010). In the last few years,
professional coaching has increasingly evolved into a discipline with clear ethical values,
competencies and a consistent process. The use of professional coaching within
organizations, as a tool for developing and supporting leaders at all levels, has
significantly increased.

Learning about effective coaching will provide business students with several benefits.
Professionally, they will be involved in managing people and leading organizations. A
major aspect of leadership is managing performance, developing people and driving
change; in such endeavors, they will frequently be called upon to coach their people.
They may need coaching themselves. Some business students may also serve as
internal or external consultants who will be directly impacting leadership and
organization development in their own or client organizations. Coaching skills will
represent an important part of their toolkit as they support leaders in undertaking these
important challenges. At the personal level, coaching has also been found to support
individual development and change. For example, coaching has been utilized in helping
leaders clarify personal and professional visions, set and achieve goals, solve difficult
problems, manage work-life issues, make tough decisions, implement strategies, and
discover better strategies for working with others.
