MURPHY'S RULES
The first Murphy's Rules - reprinted below - Murphy's drew a lot of reaction. At every con-

Our first Murphy's artist was


Richard Mather. His punked-out
paladins and befuddled astronauts set
the pattern for the series. After nine
issues, Richard gave up Murphy's,
and the feature disappeared from the
pages of Space Gamer for several
issues.
Then . . . we got Sargent. Ben
Sargent is the Pulitzer Prize-winning
editorial cartoonist for the Austin
American-Statesman. He's also a
wargamer. The hand that draws
skulking, demented politicos was
perfect for Murphy's. And Ben was a
lot of fun to work with!
All good things come to an end;
eventually, Ben had to drop the series
due to other commitments. Our third
and final artist was Michael von
Glahn, who took over with issue 71.

Designer's Notes: For some reason, after-the-holocaust games seem
real popular right now. Why is beyond me; I can think of few more
depressing environments in which to live. In addition, most such
games are patently ludicrous; a few years after a full-scale nuclear
exchange, nothing will be left but the rats and the roaches. However, I
might as well cash in on the trend, too.

Designer's Notes: This game dates back to the Persians,
who played a crude version in which the board was thirteen
feet across. The counter was made of stone and took forty
slaves to lift; as a result, play was slow. Modern gamers have
speeded play, but have not modified the basic futility of
the system.
