Running an external antivirus on the MyLab

Version 1.2 - July 10th, 2012

Only in case of serious doubts, it is possible to run on the MyLab an external antivirus program,
with the sole purpose of reporting if the system has been really attacked by a virus, without
changing its files in any way. We suggest to use the Avira Antivir Rescue System: it is a free
product that allows you to burn a bootable CD-R to be used to scan the MyLab system.
To use the most recent Avira Antivir Rescue System CD-R please follow this procedure.
1. You need a Windows XP / Vista / Seven computer carefully managed applying the latest
security patches, running a correctly updated antivirus, and protected with a suitable firewall.
This computer needs a CD-ROM burner and a connection to the Internet.
2. Access the web page
http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-avira-antivir-rescue-system
(or similar, anyway search in the Avira web site the Antivir Rescue System download page) and
download the product (the exe type file).
3. Insert a write-only CD-R into your CD-R burner and run the downloaded exe file: it will burn a
CD-R with the latest version of Avira Antivir Rescue System.
4. Disconnect the MyLab system from the data network.
5. Run the Antivirus CD previously created as described in the following taking in account the
different MyLab model:
5.1. For the MyLab60, MyLab70, MyLab70XVG, MyLabClass-C and MyLabTwice you will
have to enable booting from CD (normally disabled) from the BIOS. The procedure is
described in the document “61XX recovery procedure_rev.B” (or superior) or “62XX
recovery procedure_rev.B” (or superior) depending to the model. After the BIOS
modification, insert the Avira CD-R.
5.1.1. Press <F10> to leave the BIOS, answer “Y” to confirm the modifications and press
<Enter>, the system will reboot automatically.
5.1.2. When the following (or similar) screen appears select the default option for booting,
otherwise, when available, select the option “800x600 16 colors mode” (in order to be
sure the graphic interface will be compatible with the graphic adapter board installed in
your MyLab PC) .

5.1.3. Wait until you see the graphical antivirus screen, and the software completes the
loading phase.

7. Some languages are available on the right-top side, select the English one:

8. By default, Avira Antivir Rescue System is configured to examine all the files on the unit,
producing a report without changing anything: please do not change these settings, access only
the Virus Scanner Tab, press “Start scanner”.

9. Scanning the whole unit could take from a few minutes to many hours, according to the size of
the image database. You can check the scanning status in the bottom side of the screen, then at
the end, a summary of scanning will appear.

10. Read the number of Infected and Infections (this means the number of viruses found), Alerts
and Suspicious files (always “Statistics” section, at the end): if any, the name(s) of the infected
file(s) can be found , in this case, it is possible some virus has really infected the machine (even
if, sometimes, a normal file could be wrongly identified as a virus).

11. Press “Shutdown” selecting “Restart”. When the MyLab powers up again, immediately remove
the CD-R and set the BIOS booting device priority as before if no virus has been found.

12. If the Avira Antivir Rescue System reported any suspect file:
a. reboot the machine and execute a complete backup of it (archive, settings, etc.).
b. For the MyLab60, MyLab70, MyLab70XVG, MyLabClass-C and MyLabTwice completely
re-install the system software using the “61XX recovery procedure_rev.B” (or superior) or
“62XX recovery procedure_rev.B” (or superior) depending to the model, then
c. install the latest available MyLab software release.
d. please note that reconnecting the MyLab to the data network before sanitizing it could allow
a new malware attack.

13. Be sure, for MyLab60, MyLab70, MyLab70XVG, MyLabClass-C, MyLabTwice and

MyLabSeven and MyLabAlpha systems, to change the BIOS configuration to disable again the
boot from CD-R. (NOTE in MyLabSeven and MyLabAlpha the default boot device is IDE0
Mst)
