Abstract
The objective of optimization is to use the minimum expenses and maximum performance
and efficiency. Also, the objective in designing structures is to decrease the weight and increase
the performance. Hence, optimization could be used in designing the structures to reach the
aforementioned. Generally, there are different and diverse methods in optimization of the
structures that include classic optimization techniques and heuristic and metaheuristic
optimization techniques. However, engineers generally do not use optimization techniques in
designing structures and try to decrease the weight and increase the performance and efficiency
of the structures by empirically modifying the variables and controlling the constraints. Based on
this, this research presents an algorithm based on controlling penalty functions that do not
require memory and are in accordance with the empirical and professional method of structure
design used by engineers. Hence, this method could be used in professional design of engineering
projects, in addition to research projects. This method could be used in optimization of discrete
and continuous variables. To verification of constraints control algorithm method (CCM)
mathematical linear and nonlinear models, which have certain answers, are used. The
performance and efficiency of the algorithms in designing the structures have been studied in
optimization of steel frames and trusses and compared to the benchmark results of previous
studies, it was observed that this method has accessed lighter structure weights with
considerably lower number of analyses and it is a simple and applied method, while being
convenient and powerful. In this research, seismic optimal design of steel frames is presented
based on CCM. The functional design of structure with steel frame has been desired and for the
seismic analysis the nonlinear analysis of the structures and pushover curve drawing were used
and the weight of the structure was optimized by controlling constraints of changing the relative
location in performance levels of OP, IO, LS and CP. The performance and efficiency of the
proposed algorithm were tested by Benchmark examples and the proper performance of this
method was analyzed. Finally, the functional design of the steel frames was analyzed to decrease
the damage and relative drift of seismic frames in CCM. Based on this, the optimized multi-
objective design of steel frames was presented by using this method and the desired objectives
in this regard are weight and relative drift and seismic damage. The results of this method were
compared with previous studies and the efficiency of this method was analyzed in multi-objective
optimization.
