Compound Sentences 合句:Part II

Even though it is possible to write what we want to say in short, simple sentences, having some
variety in sentence structure is more interesting to the reader. Two sentences can be joined together
with a comma and a coordinating conjunction – a coordinator – to make a compound sentence.
In addition, a semicolon can be used between two sentences when they are very closely related.
雖然可以用簡短單句描述想表達的話,但是句型結構若有所變化其實會讓文章更加生動有趣。我們
可以將兩個句子以逗號和對等連接詞組合起來形成合句;此外,也可以以分號連接兩個語意關係密
切的句子。

Example
Ɣ My daughter is studying psychology; my son is studying biology.

Two sentences can also be joined using a semicolon + conjunctive adverb + comma.
另外,也可以用分號 + 連接副詞 + 逗號連接兩個句子。

Example
Ɣ I live in the country; therefore, when I go shopping I have to drive into town.

Conjunctive Adverbs 連接副詞

A conjunctive adverb is a connecting word that is at least four letters long. Don’t confuse these with
the FANBOYS coordinators, which are two or three letters long.
連接副詞的長度至少四個字母以上;FANBOYS 等對等連接詞,則通常只有兩三個字母。

Example
Coordinator Conj. Adverb Example
in addition Universities have dormitories where students can live; in addition,
and moreover they have cafeterias where students can eat.
furthermore
however There are about 1 million words in the English language; however,
but nevertheless most people only use about 10 thousand of them.

or otherwise Tell me what you want to eat for dinner; otherwise, I’ll cook what I like.
therefore International business is growing; therefore, more people need to
so consequently become bilingual.
