The Plan:
Cavite Mutiny 1872
by: Dr. T.H. Pardo de Tavera On the night of January 20,1872, there was an
uprising among the soldiers in the San Felipe
fort, Cavite. The commanding officer and other
Spanish officials in charge of the fort were
killed.
The insurgents were expecting support from
the bulk of the army unfortunately, that didn’t
happen. 
The news about the mutiny reached authorities
in Manila and Gen. Izquierdo immediately
ordered the reinforcement of Spanish troops in
Cavite.

The removal of the exemption of the workers in Cavite
Gov. Gen. Rafael Izquierdo
arsenal from paying tribute, starting January 1, 1872,
and rendering personal services to the government
(polo y servicio).
The non-payment of the government to the provinces
for their tobacco crops; therefore, rendering the crop
owners at a loss.
The desire to overthrow the Spanish government and
replace the head with a new ”hari”.
-All the Spaniards, including the friars, would be
executed except for the women; and their
belongings be confiscated. Meanwhile, foreigners
would be respected.

The native clergy, the mestizos and native lawyers, and
some abogadillos.
- These residents come from different places such as
Manila, Cavite, and nearby provinces.

To a great extent, the regiments of infantry and


artillery, many civilians, and a large number of
mestizos, indios, and some ilustrados were said to be
affiliated with this uprising.

1. Set fire to the district of Tondo.

2. Seize Fort Santiago and fire cannons to inform


the rebels of Cavite of their success.

3. Signal the start of uprising in Manila by means


of lanterns.
